Do your indicators on your VB-VL not auto cancel after you turn a corner? I searched the forums like a mad man trying to find some information why my VL's indicator wouldn't auto cancel, but with no success i decided to pull my steering wheel off and try and work out where my problem was! Firstly, if you have an aftermarket steering wheel installed then that may be your problem! IF NOT.... Try this: 1.) Remove your steering wheel - Pull horn pad off, then unscrew the little gold screws and remove the gold plate. 2.) You will now see a black rectangle black box, Wedge a flat head screw driver into the side of it and pop it off! 3.)Undo the nut in the middle a few turns (DO NOT REMOVE NUT YET!), (this will save your face/nose/head when the steering wheel finally comes flying off!) Place both feet next to your pedals and place both hands on the steering wheel and pull as hard as you can while banging it at the same time. (WD-40 helps and wear gardening gloves when you bang and pull the steering wheel as your palms will hurt after constant pulling/banging! Once steering wheel has come off you can NOW remove the middle nut. 4.) You will now see this 5.) There are 2 black springs (well ment to be), if you only have 1 spring or no springs then this is why your indicators wont return/cancel! 6.) This is what you will need to buy! 7.) Now just pop the new springs into the holes and in reverse order put everything back together and enjoy! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I didn't need one, i used WD40 and my hands.... Once you get the steering wheel off, the next time you need to take it off it wont be so hard... But i agree, the VL steering wheel is extremely hard to take off if it hasn't been removed before.

undo the nut untill it is flush with the top of the thread, pull back on the wheel with your knees and tap the nut a few times with a hammer and it will come off easy as and you shouldnt hurt yourself in the process

Awesome repair mate. Thanks heaps for the write up. Love threads like these. As far as a steering wheel puller goes, I made one myself out of some metal bar and some bolts/nuts/washers that were lying around. Total cost = $0.00. I still had to use some WD type stuff and a fair bit of force though - I reckon Holden must have a massive interference fit on the shaft and wheel. They must have dry iced one , heated the other and hydraulic pressed the lot together on assembly. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Therad revive , fault can also be in the two lugs on back of steering wheel not engaging the indicator switch

Head down local wrecking yard find a vl or early commodore first remove steering wheel then on back of it remove the orange ring that holds the horn disc and cancel lugs head home install to your wheel problem fixed. Its one unit held on by two philp screws it bit hard to describe and dont have a pic of it.

Sometimes its the plastic part screwed inside the steering wheel that someone put in facing the wrong way so the rounded parts don't hit the return springs at the right time to flick the indicator off.
