G'day, My name is Dean, Im an apprentice mechinic and i live in Langwarrin VIC. This is my project a 1988 VL Calais FIT-VLT(plates to be) I picked her about a month ago off gumtree, pretty clean car, usual rust round the windscreen, fairly stock apart from cut springs which the last owner had done. I havent done much at all to it, as ive lost my license and cant get around to much( car is at my Parents) Im not much of a whizz on the VL/RB motors, im know falcons fairly well though so this is all knew to me ! My plans for the car are to do a rebuilt RB30DET probably just run a T3/4 to start with, Clean standard interior, clean body, sound system. All the usual stuff to make it a nice cruiser and nothing over the top. I love the colour to so il keep it like that !! A few questions to start: The car has no rego or rwc, im a best to rego as an N/A then put turbo gear on or to put the standard turbo gear on and go for RWC/REG just to save the hassles of the turbo modifcations. Also how do people go about gettin the rust out around the screen ? Obvisously il get it ready to be done, motor out dash out etc to make it easier. Anyway here is some pics, let me know what you think and constructive cristism is more than welcome !! Thanks Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

scrap the rear chasers. they look tacky and attract attention. plus its a calais you can just use vlc rims as stockies. apart from that v nice. i would strip back the champagne paint on the sil moulds and leave them bare black. people normally paint them because they fade but if you treat them with silicon they come up fine in time. i'd rego it as a n/a. police won't look at what it is registered as when they check the engine bay. they are more interested in what mods are done (are they legal?) and whether or not the emmissions gear is there. which is hard to track down. most n/a converts are illegal because they are not fitted with higher spec emissions gear. plus you will get more enjoyment out of it if it is on the road. as for the rust you can do a few things. dependent on the severity you can have it welded up, ignore it or even weld in an entirely new beaver panel. hot tip - you will probably need a new window for r/w and most of the rust damage is in the window channel anyway so have a look at it when the window is out. g/l (looking nice by the way)

The only reason the chasers are on the rear is because the tyres on the calais rims are rooted, and i had to drive it back from Tarneit !! Will definatley keep the sil idea in mind, as im looking to keep a black "theme" with the car, eg wheels, cooler, piping, and black carpet !! Yeh i have decided i will definately rego the car as an N/A, then turbo it from there. Also the beaver panel seems to be the best idea but il see how bad it is when i get time to get the screen out !!!
