The A9L VK engine was painted red but wasn't really known as a red motor, it was kind of a black motor but painted red to signify it was the High Output spec engine like the LX Torana A9X donk.

I think what he is saying holden referred to it as a red block so I suppose it was a throwback with a 4.9 crank. All the other VKs had black blocks but this was a one off. The block was designed in 1966 originally as the 4.2, not sure which year they bored her out but it wasn't far behind. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Red was HQ, HJ, HX, HZ, WB and VB (Plus Torana, Statesman etc), Blue was VC and VH, Black was VK and VL before they moved to the injected 5.0's. There were some rare exceptions such as HDT WB Magnum's fitted with the Brock blue 308, but generally it was as above.

All WB had the blue motors which really were the pick of the 308s.
