Hey guys,
I have an awful whining sound in my stereo, and nothing seems to fix it.
So far I have done the following;
Made sure there are no power leads near the RCA leads.
Checked all the earths and sanded back the paint so there are nice grounds everywhere.
Added ground loop isolators to the amp. (made no difference apart from making the music sound sh1t)
Added a noise suppressor thing to the head unit.
Currently I have no aerial as I shaved this off when I rebuilt the car.
I am tearing my hair out thinking of things to try and fix.
I don't know if this is relevant, but when I removed the headunit ground (battery still connected) A different type of hideous whine was emitted through the speakers even though the stereo was off (no faceplate)
Any suggestions?

Blown earth track in the headunit?
Have u tried another HU in it? Does it do the same thing?
If you've done the obvious, time to start swapping things over till it stops...
Don't forget to do the earths under the bonnet too and see if it helps (battery, alt, block)

Defiantly earth problem. If you can't be bothered finding the earth problem buy your self a in line noise filter.

I've got a pioneer DEH-P595OIB and ever since i bought it i've had a whine throughout my system. Never had a problem with my old clarion HU. What model do you have?

Are you using an amp? I only started having problems once I connected all the speakers up through an amp. It was fine through the headunit. Mine is a DEH-P65BT. It took me 2 full days of testing and checking stuff till I jumped on google and found that solution. So I tried it and have never had a whine again, apart from my missus!

21-06-11, 20:49 GMT+10#11 Not tried another head unit yet. Gonna attack it this weekend. Head unit is a new Pioneer DEH5050. So far it has a noise filter on the 12volt continuous power, and I plan to add one to the accessory signal too. I got a couple of ground loop isolators, which did fark all apart from make the sound quality revolting. I have sanded all the earths twice, but I plan to add a new, and bigger earth and 12volt wire to the HU this weekend. Battery is in boot, so I will run the new earth and power to the boot. Head unit earth will terminate with the amp earth.
86SLVLT; that earthing job on the RCAs looks dodgy as, but I think I'll give it a go!

21-06-11, 21:00 GMT+10#13 I'm beginning to see a pattern here..all pioneer HU...all DEH-_ _ _ _ models. Obviously there's a RCA grounding problem with these units. I've grounded my HU really well i.e sanded area etc.. so it must be an internal fault.
I'm thinking maybe using something like this cable mite be the go. http://www.instrumentalparts.com/408-dj1900h-02.html

ALL FIXED!!!
Pulled my HU out today, pulled my RCA's out one by one and found the rca making all the whining/static sounds. I touched the outer edge of the rca to the metal caseing of the HU and the whining/static stopped.
I did as 86SLVLT has done in the pic he posted. I got a piece of copper and wrapped it around the rca outputs on the HU then onto a screw. Works beautifully

27-06-11, 20:00 GMT+10#17 ^^Seconded.
As dodgy as it looks, the copper around the RCAs actually worked! Well, I'm pretty sure it did - at the same time I also upgraded the head unit power and earths to larger, dedicated cables. No more whining!
Cheers guys.

28-06-11, 11:33 GMT+10#18 Ok guys, some info here, I've read info like this before as I had issues with my Pioneer outputs not working at all:
How I understand it , if there's a poor earth (to the chassis) on the HU, the fusible links inside the headunit will blow, then the HU tries to ground via the RCA's, and cause that horrible whine. I think another case is if you hook up the RCA's AFTER you've hooked up power to your Pioneer HU, it seems to blow the fusible links then too, and has the same result (tries to ground thru the RCA's and cause that whine).

Hope that helps

28-06-11, 15:09 GMT+10#19 if your hearing a whine in your sound system its usually a reminder that your car is a lebo mobile and needs to toughen the hell up. This can be achieved by either wacking in a turbo or two, or, adding on a few cylinders. BOOYAKASHA

29-09-11, 13:17 GMT+10#20 Is it just the front.. or just the back? i think iut may just be pioneer could be other models, but if the rca's are removed wrong they can blow a fuse on the actual rca plug on the back of the head unit.. try running a wire around the outside of the rca bits on the back of your head unit that your using and try earthing that wire also, if that works its your head unit.
