I have been thinking of cutting the back half of the floor pan out on my vl calais, and regrafting an IRS floor pan of a vq statesman into it. Has any one attempted this or something simmilar. I have done some research and found that the dimensions are close enough to make this work. I know a four link conversion is more common but i want something different and i found that the guys in the "newer commodores" with IRS at powerplay were wiping the floor with me due to the fact they were getting traction, while my poor old vl with a car load was just spinning the tyres.

use a r33 cradle, I was looking into doing it. It measures up real well and is very easy to fab up mounts and still keep factory metal. Cutting a whole rear floor section out is going to end very badly. The only thing that stopped me doing it was that my car would not fit in the garage on a rotisserie. Use this site as a bible http://driftshop.com.au/twinvl/nissanirs.html

IRS may not solve all of your traction issues either. Have another long hard think about how much work you're willing to put in, for the result that will come out.

OMG what a massive job that would be. But would the outcome be worth it?? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

You would be putting in a huge effort to end up with an inferior rear end to what you have now, if you want it for drag racing. If your having traction issues get adjustable trailing arms and some decent shocks, springs and rubber

with irs youll have to worry about breaking cv's then

better off just mini tubbing it and fitting bigger circuit tyres

IRS isn't ideal for traction. You'd be far better of doing as others have mentioned and doing tubs or a better suspension set up. Ask around some chassis / suspension places and you'll be put off with what they have to say about it. IRS is good for comfort but not ideal for traction. The guys with IRS were probably mopping you because they've got a system that works for them, not because they have IRS.

Have a read: http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=155191 It would be either a lot of work (think car rotissary) or quite expensive for a shop to do it for no praticle gain. Cars with IRS and a bit of grunt suffer from different problems than live axle. Think about this - fastest VL in the world is live axle. Having said that, if you want to be different go right ahead, I'd welcome a good thread on it. Edit: your VQ statesman will weigh a lot more than your VL, and some of that grunt will be lost to the weight, seeming like better grip.

i was having a chat with my old man about doing similar sorta thing on my project a while back. Sounds like you want it for track use. My dad only said one thing to me about it. 'You know v8supercars use solid 4 link rear end... do you think your guna be outcornering one of them? ' lol maybe if your using it as a drift car u could but as a race car theres simply no need to waist your time. If your using it just to get camber like a irs trackcar, remember that v8s have camber on the rear, but still use this setup, so it must be the best way to go. They would have some form of upper movement on the spring to do this i suppose, but wouldnt be possible on vl unless ud be cutting the crap out of the rear towers (not worth it lol). Upgrade your suspension system more if anything, or go later model car lol! http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/archive/...p/t-84775.html (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/archive/index.php/t-84775.html)
