how much is an o,g clais turbo worth these days and do you expect them to go up in value much in the coming years, looking at buying an origonal calais turbo unmolestered 180,000 klms, should the codes read like this,
8VX19 - Calais Sedan
LW5 - Engine - L6, 3.0 Litre EFI Turbocharged
MS1 - Automatic Transmission - 4 Speed - 3.0 Litre Engine Turbocharged
is the lw5 for the engine or is the l6,are these correct for calais turbo sedan cheers

Hi Mate,
Those codes are correct, LW5 refers to the original turbo charged engine, also check the engine number and make sure it ends in A8.
This topic has been covered many times before, do a bit of a search. Basically every thread has ended up the same, you can't make money on cars, as you have to factor in maintenance, rego, fuel etc etc, and the likely hood of them sky rocketing such as a Monaro etc is unlikely. But I beleive if you have a passion for VL's and love the shape etc of them, then go for it, and if they do go up in the long run, well bonus. But if you are in it for the cash, look elsewhere.
I would pay somewhere around the $10k mark for a calais in excellent condition, and it all depends on what someone is willing to pay, then thats what the car is worth. I'd pay 10k, Johnnie may pay 8K, and you may be willing to pay 12K. You see Walkinshaw's for sale over the 100k mark and they just sit there, cause they are only 'worth' that amount to the right buyer.

Hmm I would check it out thoroughly, yeah $5,500 is an alright price, then add $500+ for a road worthy, $600+ on reg, if you want to make it stock again, you probably need to spend a bit more cash. It looks as though its had a tacho installed, also aftermarket steering wheel etc etc, you will go have a look and probably find alot more, then it will start to add up in $$$ and also wont be "original".

Absolute perfect OG Calais n/a $5-7K, Turbo $10-15K.
There is so much crap out there with people asking stupid money for n/a converts and real slappers of cars etc it can be hard to sort the good from the bad.
Will they go up in price? Sure will. However it will only be the perfect examples.
As with anything, everything is only worth as much as anyone is willing to pay for it. If someone pays 30K for a perfect example then thats what its worth to that person.

these threads are so hard to answer because of all the **** out there...
guys claiming OG turbo calais because its an OG calais but they did a turbo conversion. or turbos which have been boosted and had frontmounts with holes cut out of the car. i believe you can get a good money for a VL Calais turbo only because i think there are still people out there that will pay good money for what they want just because "they want it". A single family owned 1988 series 2 VL Calais turbo auto full electrics (which work) clean interior standard radio and speakers with no one under the age of 25 to have driven it is a hard find. You can get good money for a VL calais turbo i just don't think they'll reach the status of going up by stupid amounts.

28-05-11, 00:37 GMT+10#11 without being able to see under the bonnet it at the very least has aftermarket:
boost guage, tacho, pedals, cd player and steering wheel, these are obvious and arent really that big of a deal.
also has at the minimum an aftermarket exhaust tip, but thats likely atleast an aftermarket cat back.
the cd player hints that there is probably some aftermarket things done, which may include hacking of the rear parcel shelf, subs in the boot, or worse yet speakers in the doors.
also the intercooler and boost guage seem like its probably been driven with "perfomance" in mind as opposed to grannys shed find.
anyway, none of this is too big of a deal, if the numbers match, and the body is as good as it looks, and the interior is all perfect and matching 5k is a decent deal for sure. probs get it checked out though to be sure, since people are asking that much for NA's with a straight body who knows what he's trying to get it rid of quickly for.

28-05-11, 11:07 GMT+10#13 Honestly in the used car sales and probably even more so modified cars there isn't much movement. There is no money around and people don't want to spend. Its a buyers market if the right car comes up. Still it doesn't help the stupid money people are asking for complete heaps of ****.

i think i will look at it before i make my judgement on condition and the non og bits that it does have are no biggey, but ye may be alot better or worse when i get there to look at it,im sure one corner peice of the frount is not going to be expensive and what vl dosnt have rust imo i thought it was pretty common, atleast it hasnt been hidden with bog.

28-05-11, 18:32 GMT+10#16 That is FAR from unmolested...
A car like that is only good as a cheap base for a modification project.

28-05-11, 22:13 GMT+10#17 that particular VL is not one that will go up in value
i wouldn't waste my time looking at it as it's not worth spending any $ on, you'd lose lots on it

29-05-11, 00:20 GMT+10#18 the key really seems to be waiting for something that hasnt been ****ed with.maybe if economic conditions are right atthe right time and prices go the xy/monaro way then ****ters will be worth a bit, but nobody will spend serious coin on a crapheap for at least another ten years when they are getting hard to find in any condition

I totally agree! Idiots that modify them dont really appreciate the car for what it is and dont deserve to own it.
