Hi Guys,
Purchased a Turbo Jatco 4 speed today, just want to confirm if it a turbo or N/A box? Also are the turbo torque convertors gold in color or black?
thanks

Also says RPE *1 on the bellhousing.

that is a turbo trans. torque converter can be any colour.. You really should do a search before You start a new thread. There is a tech thread on how to identify a turbo trans from an N/A spec one.

If you swap the bellhousing around??
If there are no tags?
I know turbo boxes have no o ring around the input shaft where as the N/A's do, then again swap the input shaft around again....lol
Isn't there another way?
Turbo boxes have RPE*1 on bellhousing where N/A's have RPE*2, then again swap the bellhousing around.
Physically you can fool anyone from the outside until you start to open up from the inside which l don't think people will do when purchasing a box.

Is it a stocker or a built auto intended to hold up some decent power?

it has been built to hold 280rwkw.

If it's been built it wouldn't matter if it's originally a turbo or non turbo, as long as the internals have been built up that's all that matters.

If your so concerned that you've brought a N/A trans with a turbo bellhousing and input shaft why did you buy it?... Should of got a transmission built and had reciepts for everything thats been done to it.... thats if you trust the workshop has actually done the work to it and hasn't just printed you a reciept
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

l'm not so concerned, just putting the question up that people can easily get fooled and was wondering inspecting exteranlly isn't there another way to find out apart from opening the box up?
thats all l have to say no hard feelings to anyone out there but might help someone in the future as how to tell apart from a N/A to turbo box.
cheers

26-04-11, 09:58 GMT+10#13 No-one is going to swap bellhousings and input shafts just to make an extra $50 on a sale. Is there even an internal difference? I just thought the turbo trans doesn't have torque converter lock-up.

26-04-11, 13:16 GMT+10#14 torque converter lock up is when you press the pwr button and it increseas the REVS and holds gear?

26-04-11, 13:25 GMT+10#15 Torque converter lock up is basically a clutch inside the torque converter which only engages during light throttle cruising to create 100% drive (no slip).

12-08-11, 21:14 GMT+10#16 i just went and looked at my auto it has the RPE#1 markings on the bellhousing but also has the solanoid on the side. the auto came out of a BT1 so did that model come out with the solenoid?

12-08-11, 21:23 GMT+10#17 The solenoid on the side of the bellhousing is the torque converter lock-up solenoid. No turbo trans has this.

13-08-11, 15:27 GMT+10#19 The big difference internally in terms of strength is the turbo box has 4 forward planetarys.

13-08-11, 19:09 GMT+10#20 the power button is for 4th gear (overdrive)
the turbo box has 4 pinion plannetarys as opposed to 3 pinion in n/a
there are other differences so your better of just buying a turbo box, eg shafts, servo pistons, valve body calibrations, etc
both gearboxes are 4n71b
