hey guys im in the process of fitting a new engine and box and ive just got the engine and box sitting in the bay with nothing attached .ive hooked up the starter motor wiring and just wanted to make sure the motor is turning over but when i turn the key i can hear the starter engaging but motor doesn't turn over. what could be causing this. i know the motor isnt seized , could t it have something to do with the auto wiring. inhibitor switch etc

I concur
hey guys rather than starting a new thread i thought i would revive this one. i went and hopped in my car and it wont start i can hear the starter motor just spinning? is it just knackered or is there anything that could be causing this? i would like to atleast start it cos its parked on grass at the moment.
i just went out and gave it the old whack the starter with a pole while trying to start it and it started so im guessing its time for a new starter motor. might get a brand new one this time rather than another second hand one.
when it starts it runs fine. i fitted a brand new one today and it cranked and started fine the first shot then the next time it just clicked and thats all it does but every now and then it starts as if the gear it clicking over but not spinning. any ideas im thinking i got a faulty starter motor
When the starter motor went in the VL. For weeks I thought it was the battery. Tried a new battery with no avail. Somebody mentioned to me, "when you think about it the starter motor in the VL is 18 years old.(This is going back a few years) But he was saying, just think about how many times the starter motor has started your VL. I was thinking thousands of times. Then he begun to say the starter motor can get tried(worn out). Anyway after a few weeks of trial & error I resorted to a new starter motor.
After the new starter motor. It would start within 1 click of the key & turned over allot quicker. Food for thought.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
i turned my lights on and tried starting it and the light didn't dim at all so im pretty sure im not getting any voltage drop and the battery should be fine its not to old. im pretty certain its the starter motor and the new one is just faulty. that's my luck as well so it wouldn't surprise me.

Think about it. The older the starter motor is, the more power it needs to crank it over.
i returned the starter motor and found out it was a recon one not new and i went elsewhere and got a new one and fitted that and its started first shot.
