Have a small issue, there it too much oil blow by coming from the rear rocker cover hose, l connected a catch can and that was getting full in one day, l then decided to connect the rear rocker cover hose to its original location on the turbo intake and now l'm getting too much oil in the intercooler piping.
Possible causes:
1. Rings on piston?? engine has just been rebuilt surely it can't be that?
2. The new GTR oil pump is pumping too much oil causing it to overflow out of the rear rocker cover hose?
3. Turbo seals are buggered? I did notice when switching the car off the turbo it making a SLIGHT rattling noise << bearings gone?
THANKS in advance.

How much oil pressure has it got? If you run both springs in the oil pump the pressure will be sky high. My bet is the oil is pooling in the head due to too much flow/pressure

Im no pro,
But was the rings bed in correctly? Id be thinking it would have to do with the rings.

Do you have a oil inlet restrictor for the GTR oil pump?

id look at the oil pump as they have been know before to push to much oil thats why its good to use brand new rb30 oil pumps instead of gtr ones as per the rings i doubt it unless the engine builder is a noob and u thrashed the car in the running in stages ..or the oil is to thin , without taking it somewhere and getting it looked at u wont get the right answer on a forum mate , just ideas ...

Stupid question have you got to much oil in the engine as same thing happen to mine spitted it out and filled the catch can very quickly made a mess, Dropped oil topped it to the write place and everything was back to normal

Would have to get a oil pressure gauge tomorrow...
What is a oil inlet restrictor for the GTR oil pump? where would that be located?
oil is thick to run it in, didn't put synthetic oil.
oil level is absolute "full" showing on the dipstick level.
How do l now restrict the flow of the oil entering the head?
thanks.

The Orifice controls the amount of oil flow that is delivered to the head to lubricate the
parts in the
cylinder head and to cool down the engine assembly. However the stock oil-gallery
orifice (2mm)
has a hole that is too large which allows too much oil to be delivered to the cylinder
head which
can cause the following problems.
(1) Too much blow-by Gas, (2) Blowing engine oil, (3) Leaking oil through the valve guides,
(4) Insufficient oil delivery to the crank journal,(5) Allows air pockets into the system from
when the oil pan is under horizontal G-Forces.
The TOMEI oil gallery orifice was designed developed from N1 endurance and drag racing engines.
By restricting the diameter of the orifice to φ1.5mm (Normal is φ2.0mm) we succeeded in securing
enough lubrication to the camshaft and valves while maintaining the correct amount of oil in the oil pan.

Can we not run a hose from the rocker cover and return the excess oil to the sump? Now that its too late because a oil restrictor wasn't installed during the build? Is that the only option l have?

14-04-11, 08:52 GMT+10#10 your engine builder should pay for this if he was the one that recommended the pump and installed it. its his mess up not yours

14-04-11, 08:56 GMT+10#11 you dont really want the oil that has been spat out back in the sump bro, depending on your plans for the car i'd be installing that restrictor...

14-04-11, 08:56 GMT+10#12 You can do that. I would pull the rocker cover and put another drain at the back of the head/rocker cover down to the sump. Leave the top breathers for breathing not draining oil back to the sump.

It won't hurt it, in fact I don't understand why you wouldn't plumb a catch can back. Saves you having to empty it and provides a balance between the top and bottom of the motor.

14-04-11, 09:30 GMT+10#13 so all of the oil that has been spat out gets drained back? it's been spat out for a reason, the drain back to the sump is a band aid to keep the car running, if he wants to fix the car he should look into why its blowing the oil out in the first place, i'm not an expert...if the motor has only just been built it shouldn't be having blow by issues anyway, and he is only running 9-12psi through it, imagine the shat fight that will happen if he turns the boost up, burnt oil back into the sump isnt going to help the man then.

14-04-11, 09:37 GMT+10#14 exactly. returning the oil back to the sump isnt gonna solve anything, there isnt meant to be blow by in the first place, that much of it anyway, that problem cant just be masked up it needs to be fixed
just take it back to your engine builder mate tell him hes a deadsh1t and make him fix it

14-04-11, 09:41 GMT+10#15 Yes he should see why its passing so much oil, more than likely too much oil into the head which is common on RB series engines with better pumps.
The oil hasn't been spat out.. it is being pushed into the head and filling the rocker cover, its not blow by which is coming past the rings contaminated and then travelling up through the oil galleries and into the rocker cover.
Having a balance in pressure between the bottom and top of an engine.. think of it like this, high pressure travels to low pressure, when pressure is equal fow stops. So having the balance in keeps everything as close as possible, slows down gas speeds and gives more chance for everything to pull the oil out of the air blah blah blah
I'll only say it once kids, you should always drain back.
The oil could be too thick? hence not flowing back fast enough. get a video with the rocker cover filler off and see how much it breathes at idle, it will tell us if its blow by or just the head filling with oil.

14-04-11, 10:00 GMT+10#16 Mate ive gone through the exact same drama as you but rb30 with gtr head and r33 gtr oil pump, every **** was telling me engine ***d, blah blah blah. Engine blew oil out breathers and dipstick out of sump as soon as started boosting engine after run in. Also have oil restrictors installed running 70-80psi oil pressure on load and running big stalld auto.
im running 2 x dash 10 breathers from rocker covers to catchcan
Dash 10 breather from head to sump( not in oil)
I was still havn the problem of pushing oil out breathers overflowing catchcan after one solid crack on the street
added dash 12 breather from sump(not in oil) to catchcan and fixed problem straight away, it main purpose is to vent sump not drain back oil. Also stopped blowing out dipstick after this breather was installed
Another u mite notice oil leaks lik sump, rear main etc, mine were leaking bad and motor was pritty much new. After the breathers oil leaks slowed down dramatically
people always say ur engine ***d., rings ***d etc but engine runs very well and makes power with big snail, been thrashing it for a while like this and havnt had a problem after installng the breathers
Hope this helPs i remember how fustrating it was

14-04-11, 10:07 GMT+10#17 I wouldn't drain back a catch can to the sump. The oil vapors that are blown into the can condensate and the oil in there is quite watery, which ends up in your motor. Best thing to do in this case is run one or two -10ish sized lines from the rocker cover back to your sump, which should solve your problem, assuming the engine build was done to a decent standard. Keep your catchcan setup as it is and see how it goes

14-04-11, 10:18 GMT+10#18 Oil is very hygroscopic anyway.. it won't make a difference. Once oil is up to temp the water will evaporate anyway.

14-04-11, 10:18 GMT+10#19 have we all forgotten that the guy said the engine was only just built?
if my engine (which will be finished next Tuesday) was experiencing oil overflow issues as this is, i'd be back there asking why? an engine builder (experienced hopefully) should know what is required to stop this from happening, and he should have informed you that there may be the possibility of the problem happening, what ever the engine is doing now is going to be made worse by adding more boost, and if you have a gt35/40 you don't planing on running it at 9-12psi for long.
my 2 cents, take it back to the engine builder, if one of my clients was experiencing an issue i would want them to address it with me, i'm sure the engine builder would feel the same way, i am not saying your engine is ****ed i am saying there may be a simple SOLUTION as opposed to a BAND AID.

14-04-11, 10:23 GMT+10#20 Yes true 2 x dash 10 lines rocker cover to sumP would be ideal if possible, but u would need bigger breathers from rocker cover to catchcan maybe
2 x dash 12
but after watching catchcan on a dyno run its not pushing oil into catchcan anymore, so basically that dash 12 line from sump to catchcan is acting like a breather thats the point im trying to make
