Hey guys a mate of mine has a 2002 100 series landcruiser with the 1HZ 4.2l diesel engine. It started life as N/A then recently he converted it to turbo with all the proper gear. Last week he installed a 600 x 300 x 100 cooler on expecting to get some sort of compressor surge from his turbo but it hasnt made a difference. It still sounds exactly the same as before. Turbo whistles on spool up and whistles on spool down but no compressor surge. A few people have said that its not possible as the engine does not have a throttle body on the intake. If anyone could give us an insight on how to do this that would be great. My mate understands that hes not going to get that fully sick vl muzteck dose but he atleast wants a little bit of turbo flutter when he gets off the gas. Anyone achieved this before?.... and if so how did you go about it and what needs to be done? Anyways heres some engine bay pics, the pod filter was just to try and see if we could amplify the sound. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

So this means that when he gets off the gas the excess pressure still enters the engine because its missing a throttle body? The pressure has to go somewhere doesnt it?mmmmmm.... maybe theres some sort of valve to block up with a bung of some sort? Is it even possible to install a throttle body on this setup?

Yes you can, a bloke at a 4x4 shop in Lilydale fitted a throttle body to his Nav hooked up to a spring and cable setup. As soon as you touch the throttle the TB would snap to WOT and as soon as you take your foot off it would snap shut, there was also around a half inch hole drilled in the butter fly so there was some kind of bypass to reduce EGT on the roll down. By memory he used a holden V6 TB.

There's a few 4x4's around Warragul that have a dose pipe. All you have to do is buy some pvc pipe around 15cm long. Different lengths have different pitches. Clamp the pvc pipe to the turbo intake & clamp some mesh or gutter mesh on the other end, done. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeah guys thanks for the feedback keep it coming. Me and my mate where just discussing installing a throttle body and were wondering what would happen when it closes shut but since you can drill a small hole in it, that might just work. Mate is determined to get this thing fluttering/dosing lol so we will be looking into that.

^^^lol ---------- Post added 26-05-11 at 14:05 ---------- I think late model 1hz engines have a throttle bodie, you could try fit one over. Im pretty sure they are pneumatically controlled. Its there for emisions.
