I have a n/a 1987 vl sl sedan and I am going to turbo the beast soon, just wondering how much power will the std trans hold? I have also being told a nissan skyline series 3 auto trans will hold 180ish at the tyres?? the set up on the motor will be fairly stock t3t4 @ 10psi, and fmic, exhaust, gtr injectors, turbo fuel pumps looking at 170 to 180 kw at the wheels. any input will be awsome.

As stated above, if you fit a big transcooler and some good fluid it should hold up ok aslong as you dont go to crazy... My mate went through about 3-4 standard boxes in his VLT before putting a transcooler on and it held up until it got written off...

They say running Dextron III auto trans fluid is good for up to 100,000kms... Id say change your transmission filter everytime you dump your oil..

Transcooler and good fluid as has been said. Keeping them cool is the secret to success on mildly modified cars. Just keep in mind though if you spend your life on the brake and thrash the life out of it, it will die no matter what you do. Change filter when you change oil. Easy.

Even a series 3 auto out of an r31 (rb25det box) will die if your giving it hell with 180rwkw.

I wont will be giving it s$%t, just a cruiser with some some skids every now and then. The trans has 280,000kms on it but shifts well, clean fluid, regular service all it's life.

Yeah fair enough, ive got a turbo s3 r31 myself with about the same k's. Shifts fine (although no at good as new) and fluid has been changed, and a cooler installed to keep temps down. Im running about 150rwkw and its loving the power so far. Just make sure you use transmax z/nissan matic D not dexron III this is important. And if your fluid starts burning add a cooler straight away. S3 autos are good boxes, stronger than vl turbo autos. To be honest I dont even know why they put them in a non turbo skyline, they are so big that they need a torquey motor to get them going.

yeah im planning to drop the trans pan, change to fluid, and do a filter when I do the trans cooler all at the same time in a few weeks. Got to do a cambelt next week before i do anything else:P
