I got defected on Friday night.... Yeah highway, and I also go a fine
for having extractors on P-plates Apparently it's considered a P-plate prohibited vehicle.
I've explained that I don't see how, its not a turbo, not an 8. Just a bog stock six albeit extractors. With this fine, I lose 3 points which means I lose my license over something so stupid.
The cops and Vicroads have both said its an engine modification, which its not.. Its a f*cking exhaust, and that its a mod to increase power/performance, what? All of 5%?.. Get f*cked.
Anyway just ranting now, would you guys consider this to be a P-plate legal issue? Or should I fight it?.. Considering the latter...

In NSW, p platers can not drive a car with engine/power modifications. And yes this does include extractors as they are a modification to give the engine more power

I'd probably argue that point. No where on the vicroads website does it say that exhaust modifications are illegal, only engine modifications to increase power. You could argue that extractors were used to replace a faulty exhaust manifold.
It's hardly a performance upgrade, you wouldnt get any noticeable difference in power.

what patch said.
extractors are an aftermarket performance part = big no no
its a stupid idea, but thats the law

yeah, could possibly try claim it was to replace a manifld that was warped/cracked and you cant get new manifolds anymore therefore had to get extractors, i know we have done it at work before put extractors on vans etc. maybe worth a try but dont know how hard it is over there on the vehicle laws. sucks that you loose your license over it though

yeh technically ANY engine modification at all in nsw is not p plate legal they just dont enforce it.
vic must b the same. i doubt u will get off if u fight it because on technicalities the cop was in the right. cant hurt to try tho

18-01-11, 17:39 GMT+10#10 Well I've had the extractors on for close to a year and been pulled over countless time, not one cop up until now has mentioned them. They actually were a replacement for a bent manifold, so I could use that excuse and say they were nessacery but then again they could just say I could of replaced it with another manifold.
I've since found out that I won't lose my license because I havn't lost any points in the last 12 months, I get off my P's in 3 months so I might as well just take it on the chin, pay the fine and take the extractors off for the next 3 months. If I were to lose my license over it, I'd be fighting it.
Thanks for the help guys.

19-01-11, 03:25 GMT+10#11 how much is the fine?
and yeah i'd say its a performance upgrade so illegal. thats how i read the new laws when they came in. pretty much any engine bay / drivetrain mod. but i was never under the laws so didn't look to close.
i was also under the impression that performance mods eg lowering or brake mods might even come under the laws? but maybe that was just my interpretation of the laws they were planning on introducing (that were 10 times crazier than what they actually brang in)

what about a K&N air filter. thats a "high performance" air filter compared to a factory air filter lol

19-01-11, 17:54 GMT+10#15 The fine is $239 + 3 points.
I don't think lowering etc comes under the laws in Vic however I've heard in NSW you can't modify your car at all if you're a P-plater, how true that is, I don't know.
Well I have a K&N Pod, he didn't tell me that was P-plater illegal, but that was one of the things on my defect that i got. So I'm just going back to a K&N panel filter and leave it as that, really not a fan of pods anyway.

20-01-11, 05:33 GMT+10#16 I wouldnt dare to use a pod on a VL unless its closed in a box.

20-01-11, 05:59 GMT+10#17 I wouldnt fight it, chances are they'd send you a letter next for an Epa inspection which will just cost you more money.

20-01-11, 17:23 GMT+10#18 Yeah Morgz, pretty sure I'm getting one anyway. They didn't actually test the car for noise levels though, so I have a way around that if they ask me to get it tested.

23-01-11, 07:39 GMT+10#19 if you are gonna loose your licence for more than 3 months and you need to drive for work then i would condisser fighiting it using the "cant get stockers" excuse however vic police are ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and you wont win!, ive been there plenty of times, if you can take a 3 month hit just deal with it, and trust me NEVER go fo the 1 point in 12months option!@!
