I'm asking something I'm quite sure I already know the answer to, but there was never an option for a vinyl roof on a VL, was there? It's just that I know some VB and VC SL/E's came out with either a factory black or factory beige vinyl roof option, but I'm not sure if this option continued onto VH. Since I'm doing the VL all 'grandpa-spec' I was wondering should I go the vinyl roof? Or bad idea? If I were to do it, it'd be in beige but in the long run would I run into rust problems? Or is there a way around that? Cheers.

I think he's talking about external roof like what the old sl spec toranas had and the old kingswoods

Wasn't a factory option. Not that you'd actually want one as all they do is trap moisture and rust the roof. Steer clear of any cars with them!

What was the theory, you would never have to paint the roof? At least the black attracted heat in the winter.

for a time vinyl roofs were a cheap 'repair' option for hail damaged cars as above they trap moisture and promote rust, don't do it

Thanks for all the opinions guys, I do know that they trap moisture etc, etc. The roof will be painted underneath, and if I were to do it, I'd do all I can to try and avoid the rust problem. Thanks for that photo Psi Wagon, I think I've seen that car on Youtube or something, looks familiar.

They were seen as a luxury option and were thought to make the car more expensive and luxurious. Think Cadillac, Buick, Premier, Statesman etc. ---------- Post added 13-01-11 at 18:18 ---------- Quote: Originally Posted by Matt. It's like having a wet sponge on your roof that won't dry. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Brett it seems like he's going to do it regardless one of those 'should I do it' threads when the poster has already made up his/her mind

I havn't completely made my mind up, I am a bit worried about rust. We had a 68 XT Fairmont a little while back with a black vinyl roof, mint car but the roof underneath the vinyl was sh*thouse. Also a family friend had a 60's Fairlane with a vinyl roof, and the roof underneath was basically non-existant, had pretty much completely rusted away. So yeah I'm a bit 50/50 on the whole thing, it was just a thought.

depends on how much its out in the weather/garaged etc as to the effect of the water. those pics above would be after a good 10-20 years of weathering. ide say go for it if its the look your after on the other hand. if you did go for it and didnt like it, you could pull it off and you wouldnt know the difference because it hasnt been on long enough to cause any damage

i suppose if the cars going to be garaged/stored under cover and the vinyl is sealed well it shouldn't be too much of an issue. although in saying that i own a valiant with one on it and i'm sh!t scared of what might be under there.

I was thinking of maybe using a contact adhesive (like vinyl stickering) over the roof under the actual vinyl that will be visable. I know you can get whole car's vinyl wrapped, I'm not sure if putting that under will prevent the water getting in though. And yeah, the car will most likely remain a daily for a while until I get something else to use on weekdays. But as soon as I do get another daily, the VL will definately be kept undercover/garaged everyday apart from weekends.
