I'm heading over to NZ for 10 days in May and I'm just looking for a few suggestions for outdoors type things to do/see and things not to do/see on the South Island. Any ideas would be much appreciated. We will be hiring a car so getting around won't an issue.

The South Island has lots of awsome senery. drive 30mins and your looking at a totally different landscape. Kiakura coast - seal colonys, dolphin and whale watching Westport pancake rocks are quite speckie Lake Wanaka Queenstown has plent to do, bungy jumping, gondala's,luge, jet boating Milford sounds boat trip is worth doing. The glaciers Fox and Frans Joseph +heaps more I'm going down the end of Jan for 10 days on my Motorbike.

If you go over to the West Coast go to Franz Joseph and get a helicopter tour up the glaciers. My brother in law is a pilot there and has taken us up a few times, it's worth doing If you're coming late May you might be lucky to get some snow sports in as Mt Hutt usually opens in May if they get early snow Definatly go to Wanaka then drive over the hill to Arrowtown for a day then into Queenstown What ever you do don't go to Dunedin, Gore, or Invercargill

Yeah Fiordland is worth a look, you can take a plane from Wanaka or Queenstown then go for a boat cruise which is pretty much the only way to see the sounds I haven't been on the Rakia Gorge, but I've been on the Shotover jet near Queenstown and I reckon that's worth going on

A very good friend of mine owns one of the tour boats there can recommend it.But saying that most of the Jet boar tours I have been on are great. If you are ventureing towards the top of the South(Nelson Golden bays) it is worth a trip into the national parks by boat.

What about the Rob Roy Glacier track? Does anyone know much about that? Looks pretty impressive from the few photos I've seen. Going to do a proper glacier walk on Fox Glacier also

Without hi-jacking the thread too much... I am keen to do a fishing holiday in NZ. Couple of days of trout, then mainly saltwater. Everything from snapper to kingies. I need reliable guide operators?

Lake Taupo or Rotorua for trout then head up North to coromandel or head out to Great barrier island and around there for the big fish
