I’ve seen figures of 20-30% fuel savings with custom tunes and find it hard to believe. Does anyone have firsthand experience with before and after tune fuel consumption with everyday city driving?
I am specifically interested in a VE SSV auto with no mods other than a cat back exhaust, intake and custom tune

There is gains to be had but 30% is pulling the ass out of it. 1L per 100K is more likely. So possibly 10%. There is probably more benefit it driving style improvements rather than dfco and early activation of lean cruise.

Thanks Luke. Would 15l/100km be a fair figure to budget on for all city driving?

Really comes down to the average km/h. Like here in Canberra I can get an average speed of 76-78 km/h which puts my fuel consumption in the single digit range even when I had a 230's cam. On the other hand someone in Sydney who may average less than 20kp/h will get 22L per 100kms.
Its the stop start that kills it, even if you could do 60km/h in 4th the car should hover around 9's. You can also activate lean cruise via TPS V map V speed so bringing it opn at 60kp/h as long as the traffic is flowing and there is no sharp hills would give good results.

My average would be 40-60km/h with a few stop starts with traffic lights
What's lean cruise? Is that something I would ask the tuner about at the time?
Does maff or maffless make any difference to economy?

I have a 380 rwkw monars and after tune on the way home on freeway I got it down to 9.9l/100km, just crusing around I'm at 14 to 15litres, until I start skating lol hope that helps a bit but my fuel hasn't got better since mods!

Nah MAF v Mafless doesn't really apply that much anymore. The VE maf is a good bit of gear and helps quite a bit so 9 times out of 10 it will be a maf tune.
Yeah when your talking to him just ask him what speed he is enabling the lean crusie at, I'm not sure if you need a custom o/s on the VE to enable it. I can't remember. Frashd may know, he tunes them all day.
I would think 15L per 100 would be a good guess.

My WH LS1 with mafless tune has dropped to 8.01-l/100km when i reset it before an interstate trip..
Average, combined city/hwy driving during my normal weekly routines is around 11.0l/km, and i thrash it everywhere.
Has a custom OTR w/ K&N filter and Tune using EFILive by enhanced automotive in sa here.

When you say it dips into the 8s is that on the average over a tank or on the variable?
I'm really after averages over at least a tank or even better over a few months of city driving

18-12-10, 07:14 GMT+10#14 What I have found on VE Commodores for best L/100 is stock manifolds and cats, a cat back 2.5 system. If its an auto and has AFM (DOD) leave it tuned on. Dont put Bling wheels on the car and dont drive it in sports mode. Cruise off from the lights, always put 98 Octaine fuel and make sure you ease off the line. A tune will help alittle bit but dont expect 30%. A cam change for economy can help too..
Now, lets look at it from my side of the story.... You bought a V8!!! they already use less than a V6 so be happy with that.
If your car uses on average 15L/100km with and average speed of 70-80km/h thats good for a car thats weight is 1782kg. Lets say you get a tune any achieve more power and you are happy with mods done to your car but your car uses 17L/100km now.
That means for every 100km you travel you spend an extra $2.96 if the price of fuel is $1.48p/L
I have driven 2 ltr subarus that use that much.
I am currently fitting a LS3 to my caprice with a GT42, it use to get 9.2l/100 stock, heads cam stall seen 10.5/100, these mods should see around 12.5/100 on the highway. It the price you pay for cubes and power.

What would your customers average with the VE cat back and tune, less than 15l/100kms?
