hey guys
my brakes are shot to ****. there's like 2mm left on em and the hand brake has completely stoped working.
Im not upgrading, just replacing with new parts from autobarn or bursons.
I know so far i need 4x discs and i think 4x pads. what else do i need to completely replace the whole brake sys so i have working brakes again?
Do i need to replace the brake line too?
thanks guys

since nobody has said anything ill comment the research you need is to actually look at your cars braking system and see if its drum or disc rear... you never know it could have been changed to a disc rear before you bought the car. Check the condition of the hoses i.e. is there any cracks, leaks etc.
Now going off that you have a DRUM BRAKE REAR and have checked that your calipers are in working order, you'll need:
*2 Front Brake Pads (Bendix Part # DB1085)
*2 Front Discs (Check out dba.com.au, these are stocked/can be ordered at Autobarn. Standard is Part # DBA015)
*2 Rear Brake Shoes (Bendix Part # BS1385)
*2 Rear Drums (Not sure where to get these :S go to your local brake shop and ask)
*Brake Fluid
Be a good idea to clean off all the old grease and use new grease on the bearings before putting on new discs.
The handbrake can be adjusted under the car or just get the local brake shop to do it for you.
If you need your hoses replaced, see the local brake shop for normal rubber replacements.
After everything is fitted dont forget to bleed the system until the new brake fluid is coming out and there is no air in the system. Bleed order im pretty sure (someone correct me if i got the rear order mixed up) is rear passenger, rear driver, front passenger, front driver. Keep an eye on the fluid level while doing this so it doesnt go empty meaning you have to start again.
That should get u going, let me know how it goes

pads and shoes come in sets so you need a set of pads and a set of shoes assuming you have a drum brake rear end
but since you obv haven't checked the condition of the rear shoes you may not even need to replace them
also you don't need to replace the rotors (discs) unless they have worn excessively or are badly scored

my bad forgot to mention that the pads are a set. Thats basically what u need if you want to redo all the 'consumables'...

yeah no worries. Do you think it would be too much hassel to change drum to disc? So I have disc brakes all round?

for you yes, not worth trying
start small: pad change first, then shoes if all goes ok

Also do yourself a huge favor and get a workshop manual for the VL if you havent already... IMO the gregorys one is better than the max ellery.
They can be found for about $30 on ebay and will help you with basic troubleshooting and common tasks on the VL. With its troubleshooting guide youll save the $30 you spent on it in parts that you didnt need in the first place.
Good Luck & Merry Xmas

22-12-10, 18:24 GMT+10#10 oh yeah I'm doing the front but I was going to take it to my mechanic for the drum. I'll start with the front 1st and tighten my hand brake cable, that should fix it for the time being
