Hi James here, I have been thinking of starting upgrades on my vl wagon, i want a v8 ive thought of the rb30/26 or even the 26, but i want the rumble of a 8. have been wondering what is the largest size v8 i can fit btwn the rails on a vl, i had a 402 chev in mind but i am still learning about cars and if anyone can give me tips on even the 30,30/26 and 8s in the vls it will be greatly appreciated.

The RTA in NSW had a limit of a 15% increase in engine size over that fitted by the factory. So based on the 5L this would allow up to a 5.75L capacity. They also had other rules on engine sizes per tonne vehicle weight but under those rules you couldn't even fit the factory 5L V8. Stroking a VL 5L out to a 6.3L (383ci) or an LS1 (5.7L) out to 7L (427ci) would be options on having a motor that looks like it complies but is really too big for the rules. Corsa

Yeah if you have the money go for an LS1 if you wanna stay legal and have a V8. Plus as Corsa said, you can stroke it out and no one can tell from the outside.

Either they are not legal, or possibly they had them complied

If you really want an old chev, use a tall deck 350 block, If you go getting a factory 400 block with the 4.125" bore then it will have to be registered as such, but if you use a tall deck 350 block and put a crank in it you can get well over 400 cubes into it and can be registered as a 350, which is easily (lol) engineerable. An LSx is a far superior engine but will never sound as tuff as a small block. You will also have to run all polution gear applicable to the LSx engine you put in whereas the SBC will only have to meet the same regulations as the car it goes into (if the engine is older than the car) Oh and if you were talking about a 400 big block, then LOL good luck squeezing that into a commodore!
