Might seem like a stupid question, but here goes...
can anyone enlighten me on why it is illegal to have a pod filter out in the open, yet it is legal if fitted in an air box? i understand if you have no cooler than you can have a pod, but what difference does it make to the epa if its in the air box or not?

Short answer is because its a fire hazard when its out in the open, however when boxed the risk is eliminated.

I spoke to an engineer a few months back and he said even boxed they were illegal.

And what was the reasoning behind one being illegal even when its boxed?

on ma n/a, mine goes from the factory air intake pipe and then after the AFM drops into this CAI type system where a pipe runs through where the factory airbox location through the car and drops down behind the front bumper.... guess this would be defectable?

coz the hectik wooshi sound the pod makes freaks people out..
thats why its not legal both in a airbox or open due 2 the hectikness of having a pod....

Cant remember.
Probably emissions.
Victoria has some of the most strict emissions laws in the world. Its quite silly really as we have different laws to the rest of Aust.
So for those interested in getting a mod plated car from anther state. Speak to a victorian engineer 1st.

aren't your referring to the K&N panel filter replacing the factory style paper filter whereas the discussion is re pod type filter?

04-11-10, 18:22 GMT+10#18 i find it a lil hypocritical given that a pod filter is legal provided you dont have an intercooler in the first place ie - one intake modification

04-11-10, 18:29 GMT+10#19 I was under the impression that the reason they whinge about them is because they're an oiled filter.. therefore a fire hazard...
sounds pretty rediculous anyway.. i've been pulled over heaps of times even by traffic branch and they usually just reef the **** out of it, if it doesnt fall off and is secure, they say all sweet

04-11-10, 19:00 GMT+10#20 As above, it is due to the fire hazard that the filter presents.
You may run an oiled pod filter without hassle provided that it is housed in a fully enclosed box that doesn't leave the filter exposed.
