Hi guys,
going through all this **** in my head, just need some opinions.
Basically, i'm done with rb30s. Had enough, lost all interest etc etc.
I find myself left with a very clean s2 calais (orig turbo) that i'm thinking about throwing an 8 into. Good idea / bad idea? I'm thinking carbied 355 or similar, old school, filter out bonnet, lol, etc etc. I care little about legalities etc, as it would be a once a month driver at best.
I currently have a fully built glide in the car, worth keeping? Don't see too many vl v8s with two speeds lol.
I don't care about power figures, times etc etc. Been there done that don't wanna go back lol.
Sort of looking at budget options here, too...
opinions? and how much do you guys think im up for? (ballpark)
cheers

best to run an injected V8 and if you want the filter out the bonnet look, go high rise manifold and carby style throttle body, bout you've already got the EFI hardware in the car ie lines, pump, relays etc etc. You'd have to remove all that to go carby.
You will also need to change front springs, dash (tacho for 6 needs to be changed to tacho for an 8), K-frame, tailshaft, engine and gearbox mounts, engine loom etc etc.
Given the number of 2nd hand EFIv8's on the market, parts will be easy to come by and when you get bored of that ypu can always twin turbo the 8

I'd be going fuel injected and putting a LS series motor in if you have the money.
As above a turbo 355 would go very hard.
Take a look at Aaron's (i think it's Aaron's?) blue VL Calais with a turbo 355 in the feature car section, it'll give you some ideas

OK, so if I was to go a warm injected, 308 or 355 n/a, no ****ing turbos!! lol,
would the glide be overkill? I found with the rb30, 280ish rwkw, the glide was great fun on the street. Obviously converter would have to be matched etc, but will I have the same fun in an 8? Or would it just bog it down like I imagine?

to me a glide sounds like overkill for a mild N/A street V8. a high comp 355 would be nice and have enough power for when you want to stetch it's legs.

for a warm 308/355 id go trimatic

what type of cam you thinking of running? im running a supra 5 speed box in my 308 with crane 286 cam, flat tops etc.. real nice to drive. enough power to have fun and mild enough for stick, mind you though its in an old monaro

13-10-10, 20:23 GMT+10#10 driven once a month? dont care about legalities?
355, 11:1, 288 solid cam, little headwork, single plane and your choice of injection or carb, my preference is inj.
Anything less than this sort of combo will suck with the 2 spd and even then it will need a 4800 converter to be working properly (youd get away with less if you had a shorter first gear like in a th400) but it will still need 3.9 gears at the tallest.
If you just go the old 355, 10:1 and a 286 route i dare say you will be fairly dissappointed with the outcome, NA engines simply do not have the midrange torque of turbocharged engines like you're used to.
Ill second the (already void) motion to turbocharge, you just cant beat having the torque to smash tyres in top at 100 at 3000rpm

14-10-10, 04:15 GMT+10#11 If I was doing another VL street car it would be a stock VN-VT 304 auto with a single turbo, fuelling to suit and a tune. It would be by far the best bang for $$$
