Tough new laws for street racing
Monday, 11 October 2010
Street racers in South Australia face tough penalties with the passing of new laws.
The legislation under the Statutes Amendment (Driving Offences) Act 2010 lifts illegal street racing on our streets from being a traffic offence to a criminal offence.
Key points of the new laws:
-a maximum penalty of up to three years jail and one years loss of licence for the basic offence of street racing
-a subsequent street racing offence will attract a maximum penalty of five years jail and a minimum loss of licence for three years
-if an offender causes death or serious harm while street racing, theyll now face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment
-anyone who promotes or assists in staging a street race will also be subject to these tough new laws.
Driving hoons pose a danger to themselves, to their passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Under the new laws they will be treated as serious criminals.

stupid, as while speed is a major factor in most crashes. street racing is to blame for less than 1%.
oh but dont worry if you crash your modified car speeding or not the news will sure say you were involved in a drag race.

Define whats street racing though? Like blocked off roads, F&F style or me getting to 80km/h in the slip lane really quickly on a tuesday afternoon lol? too many shades of grey.

If I see Mike Rann on the street i'm going to punch that fuckers head off, build us a drag strip you faggot.
Just a whole lot of scaremongering anyway.
No minimum sentence and will probably just end up with a whole bunch of suspended sentences for first offences.
Might cop 6 months or something if you have previous driving convictions.

hmmm, that would probably be a murder charge not manslaughter
note is says the maximum is life if someone is killed, not unreasonable to me or most people i'd suggest
how hard is it to not race someone on the road

Australian laws aren't equal.
You would need 10 drink driving convictions just to lose your license and cop some pick up paper duties or painting over some graffiti, yet you speed off from a traffic light (not necessarily breaking a speed limit) and you face jail time.
There's already laws to make street racing illegal... use them for good use instead of political point scoring.
