Hello just after some advice a mate of mine brought an 308 and it all looks pretty good intearnaly to me it looks as if its just been run in.
the only thing im not sure about is it has 60 thou over size pistons and i was just wondering will this cause any problems down the track ive been told shes pretty much dead.
Any info will be greatley appreciated,
60 thou over is generally the accepted limit of the holden 308/304 block, if it's in good nick, just run it until it dies. Excessive breathing from the breathers is an indication of worn rings (amongst other things) But basically if he has plan to rebuild it he will be up for a new block, and obviously pistons and rings. Being 60 over wont cause any problems however if any arise it will mean the end of the blocks useable life.
I'm running 60 thou in my red 308 (dropped in a VH). When I lived in the northwest of WA it did get pretty hot during the summer months (humid days), but fine during the cooler months.
Engine has been sitting for the past 5 years and I've just brought it back to life in another VH (after a gasket kit of course) and it's still going hard and strong. I now live in the great southern of WA so it should stay a bit cooler.
Overall, I really only had cooling issues
My ole HJ 308 (312) had trouble cooling at 40thou over but I guess it was supercharged.
The 4 core radiator, thermo's, flex fans, 80% Glycol didn't help much either just wasting $$$.
at 60 thou it had better have the honing marks still visible and lip in the bore to live a few more years of thrashing.
