Basically I want to set up the VL Wagon with a new stereo. Its currently running a tired older setup of aftermarket 4" speakers in Front and 7x10" in rear and a ****ty old head unit. Basically I want to run 6" splits in front doors and 6x9" or 7x10" in rear. Just seeing what people are using and happy with. Im not doing the sub thing, so i basically need good quailty speakers that can put out real BIG sound!

Hey Mate Ive had a sound system in my car for a while now which consists of 2x Clarion subs "sw1251", Clarion Mono amp, Kenwood head unit as it produced very good power, Alpine type S 4" and Alpine 6x9''s in the rear parcel shelf as well as a 1 Farad capacitor. I was very happy with this setup, bass is strong and very punchy, speakers are clear and loud enough for most people although i decided to change my rear 6x9" speakers, they were Alpine now they are Orion RTX or XTR, keep getting confused. I chose Orion over, alpine, Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer etc simple because they produced awesome power, the quality of them is great and the sound that came out of them literally crapped on the wrest, so much clear and so much more punch. In all honesty ive heard Alpine are being made poorly now and aernt as good as they once use to be. More then likely i would change my front 4" Alpines to Orions as well.

If you want big sound out of a speakers, youll need an amp. A deck only puts out 4x50watts, which is only about 22rms or somethin tiny.. a 4 way speaker amp of around 60rms a chanel will have the spakers runing at maximum potential and make a hugeeeee difference. look at around $200-$300 for the amp + a wiring kit.

If you want a decent system, don't get 6x9's in the back, get 6" coaxials in the back, splits in the front, sub in the boot, 4 channel amp and monoblock. Depends on how much money you have. If you have a sub then I wouldn't get 6x9s. But thats just me.

I'm also looking at getting a system soon, I was thinking about getting 2 12" type R subs in the boot, and I'm not sure what speakers I'd get in the front and parcel shelf, but from what your saying Shaun, I definatly don't want anything to produce bass, I need sharp sound quality right? So what would I go with, what amps etc? Thanks.

Definitely go with splits. Have you had a look at Alpine PDX series amps?

I'm new to all this, got my first car not too long ago, so I don't know what amp or amps I would need for what. Also don't think I'm going to get speakers in front doors, as there's no holes and I think I might just leave it, but I want to get new speakers in the dash, is thay easy to get to? I won't be installing though so would it be expensive? So if I were to get 1 or 2 subs in the back, 6" speakers on the parcel shelf? and new speakers in the dash, not sure of what size I can get in there though. =/

So what amp would I need to run 1 or maybe 2 12" subs, 4" speakers in dash and 6 1/2" speakers on the parcel shelf? And how would they be wired?

You wouldnt amp 4" speakers as its not worth it. Just get a Mono amp for the sub and a 4ch amp for the rear speakers, and if you add extra speakers at least you know you got the CH to do it.
