ok guys, im looking at the way my car is setup at the moment, basically a whole stack of money invested in the front half of the car, big brakes, decent motor, good clutch box etc... all of that is sweet, but now i think its time i work backwards and think about building a decent rear end to suit, i know theres a few threads around, im pouring through them pretty rapidly atm, finding prices however, is pretty hard, as most of them are infested with melbournites and whilst it is cool that their cousins mates best friends fiance has sweet hookups to score them what they need, their prices dont really reflect what is available in WA... currently the car has a minispool, standard 28spline axles, etc. this is good for the moment, and i am considering also selling this whole setup axle to axle if anyone is interested... traction is a massive issue atm, and the bushes are also looking pretty tired. first up i want to get under there this week or next and sort out those bushes, basically looking for a whole rear end kit, does any1 know of any good deals on getting them as a package? nolathane (or however its spelt). found a few links on here but tbh im not even sure which bits i want to replace, some obviously i dont need, but do i really just want to replace the ones listed here: http://www.nolathane.com.au/docs/veh...ement_kits.pdf (http://www.nolathane.com.au/docs/vehicle_enhancement_kits.pdf) ? or is there more i should do? heres what i am thinking long term: -31 spline full spool centre (as opposed to a minispool since its stronger and doesnt rely on anything else) -billet axles (31 spline obviously) -3.9s (current diff already has these but ill probably get new) -billet tailshaft (two piece) im fairly confident i could disassemble and, more importantly, reassemble a diff with out too much dificulty. would be vastly cheaper to do it in my garage, and when dealing with a full spool as far as i can gather its a matter of just smacking it in there bolting it up and sliding axles in. no aligning etc since its a direct swap of all the internals... the billet tailshaft will be happeneing regardless though, as thats a very important part. i've read mark vlt88 managed to get a billet 2piece whole thing brand new made up by phil purser (was for a glide though) so i may just give him a ring and get a quote, i remember reading he got it done for under $700? anyway, im looking for info and prices on the parts listed, you can pm me if you like. additionally to this setup i propose to add some et streets or similar, im sick of loosing all the speed in second when the wheels let go at about 4.5k... edit, the other option is to just put a full spool in the diff i have now, i have a spair set of axles on hand... however im wondering is it worth investing in a full spool and keeping the standard 28 spline axles? or should i stick it out save a bit more and sort out 31spline billets?

It's not as simple as bolting it all in. If you take the pinion out, you need to set the backlash and shim adjustment. Pinion and ring gears are also matched, so you can really replace one without replacing the other. A Nolathane rear end bush kit goes for about $180 off eBay last time I checked. You'll need a press and a few other tools to fit the bushes unfortunately. What's the purpose behind your car?

street/strip car, weekender only. i know spools are illegal but ill have none of it, because the other options are all inferior, not interested in a kaaz either, because i just dont like the unpredictableness of something that can come in and out, eg changing lanes etc, not interested. the more research i do, the more obvious it is that spool > all oh ****, i thought some of that could be avoided, damn, that means its going to get expensive because ofcourse i dont have a press, dont ask me how i thought it was going to work, i just thought it would be easier than that :P ill sort the bushes first then, and do as much as i can myself, might aswell just drive the minispool with the 28 spline std axles untill they pop and then look at building a 31 spliner...

Yeah.....spools aren't really the best thing out there. Depends what you want to spend. Spools are great for the strip though.

i know tim, but im just not keep on spending extra money for something that, lets be honest, doesnt really suit what i want to do, especially for the track, like i said, the idea of a limited slip diff doesnt suit me, they can come on at weird times and im not happy with the thought of it locking at the wrong time, rather stick to the predictability of the spool. it is truly a weekend car though, so i can put up with the spools jittering, and it is almost silent if you do grandma turns... im thinking ill just buy the full nolathane kit, install the couple of bits i can do myself, and then take it to a shop. kind of thinking ill do all the suspension in stages, i do need input here most of all, you know a whole lot about suspension and diffs tim so i will be pestering you for advice at one time or another mate, if thats ok. ill just do some more research for the moment, still finding old bits here and there throughout the site using different words in searches.

Hi mate I work in a suspension shop in Sydney and i own a vl that i drag a bit and have been working on the suspension a bit. I have replaced every bush in the car with super pro bushes i wouldnt use nolathane do to i have seen a few cars come in here with them and they were falling apart. As for shocks and springs i have got a coilover set up in the front using a King spring and a Koni shock which is externley adjustable which i have revalved to 90/10. In the rear i am using a King spring again and the Koni shock again which is adjustable from the top as well. If u are interested i can get you some prices on parts.

how the **** do you make a billet tailshaft for $700? the billet would be worth more a billet item started its life as a solid item and is machined down to specification, no joins, no cast marks etc

i have heard mixed reports on nolathane and super pro, i was going to nolathane because its red, haha, but alot of people say super pro, but i have heard that nolathane use a softer compound now. I reckon super pro is the go though. Everyone recommends it.

ok just to bring this back, i've made a few executive decisions that i am sure tim (5spdvl) would approve of. a kaaz came up for a price i just couldnt say no to, and to be honest, i am already sick of the spool. its shaking the **** out of the car, operating it in anything but a straight line is putting a huge strain on the driveline, the car is difficult to manouver, and coupled with a heavy cluth making small manouvers often result in a stall. also the kaaz has new nolathane bushes installed anyway lol so i put it to you gents now, that i am looking at revamping the rear end slightly, and slowly moving forwards... tax time is nigh, so im ready to re design. im hoping to solve my traction woes by doing this: kaaz lsd, 3.9s (owned) adjustable panhard (owned) new bushes throughout (halfway there) box lower controll arms (making enquiries) whole new rear suspension setup (i really need advice here) i'm thinking a new rear sway bar (is that what its called?) is also in order for stability. then top it all off with m/t street radials on 18s (i'll organise this last) i really need help designing the whole suspension setup, and i've done my share of reading on this site, im thinking i want coilovers in the rear, so height is a adjustable, combined with some soft (but not too soft springs). since the vl is only ever going to handle well in the straight, im just seeking a chat with those of you who have done it in the past. looking for a happy medium here in terms of a rear suspension setup. i understand that being a vlt its not going to handle like an evo, but i would like some semblance of controll, and im willing to go to pretty big measures to sort it all out. but i also require consistant traction when i launch it at the strip. if anyone could suggest some good starting points i'd be greatful. im continuing my research for this week then i'll be making some more informed phonecalls to suplliers as well as workshops etc. also am i missing anything for racing? obviously i will be installing tailshaft loops, and theres boxing the lower controll arms, but should i organise anything else while its all going to be apart?
