hey guys me and my mate who builds race engines have been talking about building a fully worked na rb30 just for the simple fact that im on my red p'z and dont wanna be hassled by the boys in blue who reakons its worth doing it

Not worth doing. At all.
Save your coin, wait until you're off your p's and go to town on something that's worth it.
Your mate being an engine builder could probably save you some dollars, but general consensus is that the result isn't that great. There have been a few quick na's that I remember.
But yes, summary: Wait

i was thinking of making i n/a built for big shots of nos just for fun lol

it would be fun to build it up, but it's too much hard work for such a little gain.
Also the cops will ream you so bad with any modified car if they inspect it. Even if youve just got a pod filter, cam and exhaust on a N/A VL you'll still get screwed over.
There was a guy on here with a Purple/silver VL Calais and he was building a hi-comp RB30 with a twin cam 26 head from a GTR, i don't know if the car is finished or what but apparently it was gonna be a big setup for a N/A RB

i think a highly worked n/a still falls under that category your trying to avoid.

i dont think it as hard as a building a turbo one as there is not as many things to worry about, intercooler/turbo setup etc etc.... but i do agree that there would be not much gain without the gas....

Yeah and it's illegal anyway lol. Also i'd be worried about a big cammed up N/A RB30 being more likely to overheat on hot days and do some damage

I looked into this years ago..
Building a N/A to have any sort of decent power is prohibitivly expensive.
Most powerful N/A single cam RB30 in a VL i found out about was 260 RWHP. The guy had spent over $10k on the engine alone (yet alone other driveline components to cope).

An n/a with a huge cam is going to attract more attention from the fuzz than 15 dose pipes. If you want to break the law turbo it and keep it stelth. This means no 22" chrome mags, the standard exhaust and a hidden intercooler. plumb back the bov and unless you're being a **** head the likely hood of an officer asking to pop the hood is going to be minimal.

25-03-10, 12:41 GMT+10#10 The reciprocating mass of an RB does not lend itself well to high performance NA applications. The problem for an NA is the exact same reason they are great for turbocharging, heavy bottom end.

25-03-10, 13:22 GMT+10#13 Do it... 26 head 12:1 comp, meth, fuck off large cams and rev the snot out of it. You may need to lengthen the intake trumpets on the 26 though. 90 deg straight through the bonnet
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

25-03-10, 13:51 GMT+10#14 haha do it, my vr had some work done to it (yeh i no its not a vl) big exahst extractors ss intake t700 etc, got defected for height n balled tires, cops didnt care about the engine mods and you could hear that it was alot louder then a stock engine - cops arn't exactly too fussy with mods aslong as they cant see them eg pod filter.

Thats what this guy with the purple/silver VL Calais was doing. RB30/26, between 11:1 or 12:1 something like that, big cam, intake work and free flowing exhaust. Apparently was gonna rev very high
Someone should try find this guys user name out. I'd love to see some pics of it when it's finished.
