I've got an r33 5 speed box that appears to have an input shaft bearing noise. T makes a whine/ whiring noise when the clutch is out (foot off the pedal) and in neutral. The rest of the box is mint and operates perfectly. I was wondering how damaging this issue is, and what it would cost me to rectify the noise. Also if anyone can recommend a workshop who would be able to fix it in the Canberra/ Sydney region would be much appreciated.

Hey mate its more then likely your throwout bearing. These are a box out operation & are cheap if its the standard push type, maybe less then 50 for the part. I have driven cars with the noise for a little while before replacing without any problems, the noise was just annoying. Its the bearing that engages/pushes onto your pressure plate, and is attached to your clutch fork, common for them to wear out if they sit around without use and then reused.

Thanks for the reply mate, but from what I have researched a worn out throwout bearing generally only makes the noise when you put your foot on the clutch and disengage the gearbox from the engine? Mine makes the noise when te clutch is released and the engine is turning the box?

Ive got the same problem in my MX7, sounds like a supercharger at idle in neutral until you put the clutch in or put it in gear.

Yea you will need the main bearings replaced in the gearbox, I know when I rebuilt a mx7 I had once the bearings cost me a little over $100 but the labour you'll pay for that job could be up around the grand mark...

I've got a r33 box that I'm rebuilding myself. The full bearing/seal kit costs around $700 and I'm doing syncros aswell ( I only wanna rebuild it once :-) I havnt got a price on the syncros yet but I would guess there around 100 bux each? You can only get the syncros from Nissan as far as I know and you'll need the vin off the orig r33 the box came out of. So I would emagine a full overhaul by a shop would be around $2000 cheers dean.

yeah got the same thing when i let go of the clutch on my mx7... a mate said it might be a thrust bearing?? its worse when the cars warmed up also when driving there's a fair bit of vibration and noise from where the selector is, and i think that might be the throw out bearing you's speak of. sorry to barge on someones thread but it saves me starting one

Is this the box I sold Trent? If it is I am dissapointed. We pulled it out of a going Skyline and it was perfect? I wouldn't of sold it to Trent if I thought it had an issue. If I can help out I will.

Having the same issue with my mx7 ATM. Going to throw a new clutch kit and throwout bearing in there see if that fixes it Also just for a if possible for a bit of extra security. Is it possible to replace the input shaft bearing, the one that sits behind the front bearing retainer plate (front of box) I have both Gregorio's and Max Ellery's reaper manuals Is this possible to do with out removing bell housing? I have a healthy amount of tools, inc snap ring removers etc.. Cheers D
