Hi guys was wondering if anyone could help me, i own a 1988 vl wagon with the rb20e, and i want to put a rb30de in it, i know they never came out de and i will have to do a conversion. i recently bought another 88 wagon for a parts car and to use the engine for my conversion it was registered as a 3.0l but my friends think its a 2.0l i have searched all over the net for an answer but havent really found anything i want to know what types the vl wagon came in. My repair manual said 3.0L, 3.0L turb, and the 2.0L. I wanted to know what combinations there was factory with the different transmissions. E.g. mine is a 2.0l manual. The car i purchased is an auto. SO in short did the 2.0l ever come out with an auto? or is there a simpler way to solve this problem??

whoa. best to maybe have this moved to the nz section as in australia we never had the 2.0l version also when you say rb30de you mean rb30e? as in the rb30 block found in skylines and generally late model vls with the turbo lines drilled into the side but plugged up? also i have heard about the 2.0l manual as standard but apparently the gearbox is even weaker than the n/a 3l manual so scrap that straight away. the obvious question is why not just register the 3.0l wagon? things that will need to be changed - engine / gearbox / ecu / gearbox control unit / wiring harness / brakes / tailshaft / diff (gears will be way out of wack with the 2.0l) tbh i'd register the 3.0l vl way less effort

Any Engine (2L or 3L) came with either Manual or Auto Trans here in NZ... If your looking to build a 30DE, i think buying an RB30e VL and putting a 25DE head on would be alot easier?

Yeah thanks Dan, that basically answers my question, it is probably a 2.0l then. The reason i bought the car was because i was rearended and needed the rear to fix my wagon, the main point to buy it was the rb30e, which i already have a 25de head lined up, so now i have to find a 30DE at SIRoller, yes i am planning to put that 30E in and convert it to a 30DE with an eventual turbo conversion. as the car is most probably a 2.0l there is no point reregistereing it, and anyway i would just swap the plates thanks for the info for the conversion, i have been told most of that, but very good to know about the gearbox, no one has told me that yet!! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

from what ive heard you cant just put the rb25 head onto the rb30 block there is a few modifications that have to be done such as welding up an oil galery or sumthing but yeah could be wrong never really looked into it.you might want to check this out first
