What do people think about these new packages offered by Monroe where they have designed their new range of GT Sport Shocks to match up to King Springs and put them in a kit? I know Monroe have had a bad rep in the past but are these new ones likely to be a alright in the package for what their worth? Considering a package containing super lows and shocks delivered for $675
Packages!

For that sort of money it's probably not a bad option, but I don't like Monroe for a number of reasons so I'd never put them in any of my cars ever again

Generally my experience has been bad ride with lowered springs, too soft, and they don’t last long before losing rebound control and in some cases leaking. I’ve had them in 3 cars, 1 with stock springs and 2 with lowered springs... never again

but what about if you get bigger sway bars? coz im all so looking at getting whiteline adjustable sway bars front and rear.
the front will as stiff as they go and the rear will be on the softer side?

Sway bars don't make the shocks better

Monroe are ****, they have a poor life expectancy in my experience. Either go some KYBs or spend a bit more and go Koni or Bilstein.

Packages are now $620 delivered but I just found a store doing packages with KYB Excel-G Shortend Shocks and King Springs for VR VS VT VX VY for $695 so I emailed him to see if they'll do VL
EDIT: This is the reply i got,
"I have sold every brand of shock and springs over the years..And every brand of shock is better than Monroe shocks in my view. KYB are the best shock for the price these days but they do not do a proper short shock for the rear of your commodore. They recommend the normal length shock.. But they really need a proper short shock to keep the springs in place."
So if i do go KYB i'll have to go a different brand for the rears!

I have a trick for using standard length shocks for the rear (or in my case I want to go lower than the 50mm drop I started with)
Cut off the lower shock mount, turn it upside down, and then weld it back on. It's quick/easy job and is equivalent to a 30mm shorter shock
So go get your KYB kit and do this... it's going to be 100 times better than Monroes!

17-01-10, 15:18 GMT+10#10 i recently bought that set up and my car drives like its on rails, its pretty stiff aswell i would recommend it them, but i would also change the rubbers and strut tops aswell to make it feel that bit more tighter, my car previously had pedders and they were alot more softer in my opinion

18-01-10, 12:24 GMT+10#11 Well I was going off the info the guy gave me, he got it out of a parts catalogue which must be out of date, I checked out the KYB website and they now offer shortened shocks, I emailed him with this info and so now he's going to order some in, So king springs KYB package is $595 for a VL, I don't think it's up on ebay yet but i'll order a kit from him, for anyone else that wants to know he's user name on ebay is nrap, Ringwood auto parts.

26-01-10, 21:15 GMT+10#13 Im using that setup in my VL, im preety happy with it, i think all i need is new whiteline sway bars and i should be preety much set.
The ride isnt as firm as i would like, but that could be from maybe im just used to coilovers.
I got also a full bushing kit also but what i see i dont have is the sway bar mount bushings as in where the sway bar mounts to the chassis, im guessing they are nolathane what part NO?

Yip that's correct, you can also move it down about 10mm

Sway bar mount and sway bar link bushes are the most important, you'll notice a big reduction in body roll

27-01-10, 08:12 GMT+10#15 I have done the sway bar link bushes but not the sway bar mount bushes, will get them done asap.

27-01-10, 08:42 GMT+10#16 They don't make as much difference as the link bushes, but still worth doing

Hey, that photo above is of my current setup - although i have since upgraded to a bigger rear sway bar. I ended up replacing the bushes AND the mounting brackets on the rear bar - Therefore i replaced the bushes with universal bushes instead of the Commodore specific bushes in order to fit the new brackets.
Nolathane Bush part numbers - To fit factory Commodore bracket:
Bar Size Part Number
14 mm - N42039
16 mm - N42040
18 mm - N42041
19 mm - N42169
20 mm - N42042
22 mm - N42043
Nolathane bush part numbers - To fit universal Nolathane bracket (N42931):
Bar Size Part Number
14 mm - N42914
16 mm - N42916
18 mm - N42918
19 mm - N42919
20 mm - N42920
22 mm - N42922
There are other universal brackets available but the above part number was the best fit - The only difference between the various universal brackets is the centre to centre measurement. The above one is 65mm -the holes are elongated so there is some room either side of the 65mm measurement. I used washers on the factory nuts for added awesomeness!
Hope this helps you find the bushes you're after.
Regards,
Jason

27-01-10, 17:44 GMT+10#18 Well this is the package I ordered, I was a bit hesitent at first when I saw the front springs were black and had an ultraride sticker on them but I called him and he confirmed they were King Springs that were painted black and if I scratched off the black I would see they were painted yellow, and it was, he said he can get these King springs cheaper through Ultraride than directly through King Spings.
So this is what I got for $750 delivered
King Springs SuperLows
KYB Excel-G Shortened Shocks
Nolathane Bearing Plates
and i've ordered a Adjustable Panhard Rod $104 Delivered
When the paint is scratched off
Adjustable Panhard Rod

Thanks i guess theres not much point in me getting them now as i do want to get thicker sway bars and by the looks of it you have to know what thickness sway bars you have to know which ones fit.
Thanks for that, much appreciated.

Yeah, you need to match them to whatever sway bar you have - so you may as well just wait until you get your new bars.
No probs - happy to help
Cheers,
J
