Hello Iam about to do a boot install in my vl and thinking of making a box out of MDF with the subs sitting inside of the box facing out towards the rear of the car, although was thinking of putting some perspex infront of the subs with a light inside the sub box for it to look good at night when i open the boot. So it will look something like below but instead of the subs facing the back seats i want them facing straight out or on an angle facing towards the blinkers. My questions are, will my bass of my subs still be there? Should i make a hole in the box at the back for air and woofer note to escape? Is it true that some subs shouldnt be facing to close as the magnets are to close, whats the theory here? Thanks Dean Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Gee nice setup their. I was told that a sealed box has more of a firm bass(punchier). I've had a few sound systems now and can't be happier with the seal box. I found that the bass hits hard with no drone. Also I was told that the more air traveling around the boot allows for more vibration and free air was so 90's. Also the subs I'm using are 1400watts which has fairly power magnets, so I'm thinking the magnets close to each other will make the subs work harder and cause problems as the amp would have to work harder to move the subs. If you placed to negative magnets together you'll notice they push against each other. Possibly the same with subs creating a interference between the two subs & minimizing the effect of the subs. HTURBO Yes that setup is quiet familiar, apparently its in a 2005 model HSV VZ R8, HaHaHa, the bloke must have a bit of money as he has a VLT and a CRF. Is it true that you need to do the right size box for the subs you have?

Yeah work work work. That's all I've done and most of the money goes on my hobbies. With the box size it doesn't have to be exact. With a seal box it allows for more leeway, with mine I'm about 0.5 square meters out of recommend specifications but still sounds great. It's funny I own a tin shed to house VZ and when I pump the volume up all you hear is vibration from the tin, sounds like someone is jumping up & down on the roof. With a ported sub box the size and length of the port is very crucial to making a ported sub box. Plus you lose that firm punchy bass feeling. With a seal box mounted firm to the car body all you feel is bass and most of the times it's hard to see out of the rear view mirror because it vibrates like mad. Anyway go sealed you'll never regret it. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ok i have done a sealed box, with just my subs facing directly out. What size sub box should i have done, im running 2x clarion sw1251's, 700 watts of maximum music power, 250 watts RMS. I will put up some picts tomorrow, of my build.

When you brought the sub in the box it came with should be a piece of paper stating the specifications and the box dimensions best suited for that subwoofer.

perspex screens look the good but that pretty much makes it a bandpass, which is **** for all music bar rap/hip hop and music with lyrics and or techno style beats will sound **** because it produces a deep bass noise that echoes. and yeh as been said magnets to close can course trouble for your amps and subs. good luck

Hturbo how have you found it, does it effect the quality coming from the subs?? ^^

I found the sealed system works great. I've had a few free air configurations and found the seal box works a treat and is heaps better compared to free air. The box is firmly mounted to the boot and the back seat and feels great. Except when your trying to look out the rear view mirror, it vibrates like mad. It's funny at night, when a car is behind me and you can see the two single head lights, but when the bass hits the lights in the rear view mirror turn into a burr. Quality wise, the bass hits firm and punchy and gives you a nice back massage. Great with all types of music. It's funny, apparently my friends can hear me coming a few Km's away. With a sealed box it allows for more leeway where a ported sub box the size of the box and length of the port is crucial. Also I've had a couple of ported box's and found they drone.

Cheers mate, but i was referring more to using perspex in the box like your setup above? DVO mentions it can effect sound quality, have you found this at all? I just trying to figure out whether i should go and make the subs a bit of a feature like that or just have everything hidden and clean.

I reckon it doesn't. The perspex is solid as a rock and fairly thick. It would be no different to solid wood(MDF) I reckon. It just comes down to if you like to have a feature in your boot.
