Afternoon Australians! Bought myself a VL Wagon a few weeks ago, and have now managed to fit a head deck and all new speakers throughout the car, but I have a few issues. The head deck wont sit flush in the dash, as the original stereo did, is there any way to fix this? and the other issue, I cannot get to the dash speakers. My attempt only managed to ruin my air vents. Cheers Zac

Aftermarket head units need to be angled a bit to fit in the original slot, they will all be a bit bigger than the factory unit. Dash speakers, you need to remove the side air vents first... how have you ruined them? You're almost done if you have the air vents out.

Nah, couldnt even get the air vents out, I have managed to crack the black surrounds on both of them, trying to lever them out with a putty knife

They have screws in them...you do know that don't you? They just don't pull out. Remove the front louvers, then feel inside the vent, there should be 2 screws at the top.

And that will be why I couldnt remove them. I had looked all over the web, and all I could find were How-Tos that just said "Remove the air vents" with no mention of how to go about this. Do I need to remove the top or bottom louvers?

Both louvres need removing. The top one has locating tabs on the left and right sides, the bottom one has locating tabs on the top and bottom sides.

Only the bottom louvre (the big one) needs to be taken out. as jordy said, it's got a tab on the bottom and a tab on the top. use a flat blade screwdriver and GENTLY pry it out, levering it little from the top, then the bottom, then the top etc etc. take your time with it, don't rush. once thats out, look up into the air vent, behind the top louvre you will see 2 screws, take these out, then you can pull the whole air vent assembly out (pull it straight towards you if your sitting on the seat). then the top bit of the dash that covers the speaker, you can pull that straight out too. and you'll see how it goes back together. both the driver's and the passengers side are the same. You can get the deck further in the dash if you die grind the sides of the stereo slot down, not good for the purist who may want to put an original deck back in later on.
