When you say you have a BT1 motor in your car,I presume it is not a VL motor? As you say it is a 308,304 Black was used in the VL,If it is a 308 BT1 then it will be different,Larger valves,And a little bit of port work(bugger all)
They were a smoother running engine as they twicked up just a tad by PB.
Also had a different inlet manufold on them as well.

If it is a factory v8 VL, it will be a 304. All VL 304s came with the large valve style heads, and the 941(?) brock style dual inlet manifold.
The motor is the same. The difference is in the options, that the car was ordered with, i.e. country pack, sump guard, heavy duty wiring, 1km/h increment speedometer, front map pockets, front ash trays etc.

They probably got FE2 springs rather than V8 springs which I think are different, did the cops order extractors?

malkers u may want to do some research into the vl v8 as the cop cars still had a 308 block in them as for what is done with heads and the rest is the question i asked .........the reason i know this is because when i went to redo rego on it i asked if that engine number came from a vl and there reply was yes a 86 vl v8 so therefore the 308 block still came out in the vl v8. it was just the head and valves i was asking about as am looking to put bigger cam and was wondering what the difference in the heads were. now there has to be a little bit of difference as my mate has a vl v8 as well all standard same diff (not sure of his ratio) but my diff is a 10bolt 3.08 outta a vk and i smash him all day long so all i can think is the heads must be different in some way

13-01-10, 23:29 GMT+10#10 What is the cam timing and distributor timing at?
Are you sure the cam and pistons are the same?
Do you have the standard converter?
This question is a little of topic, but what tailshaft is in your car then?
I have done a little research. What does your engine number start with? VJ is the code for ALL V8 VL's that aren't HDT or HSV.
All "Blocks" from VK to VP II are "308" Blocks, as the block was not changed to change the size of the motor to meet Group A regulations, the stroke was changed the stroke will be 77mm instead of 78mm.
Measure the cc's if you don't believe me. Guarantee it is a 304, if it is the factory motor. ALL VL Heads are the Big valve Brock style heads, as used on some VKs. (Codes end in 351, but i have seen the VH and VK 955 codes on factory VL V8's too)
Early VH's with BT1 codes and later VH's with the V5H codes, as well as VK's with the codes V5H and apparently one example of a pursuit car with the V7X option are the only officially factory modified Holden V8 Commodores.
Early VKs changed from 308 to 304, and there is a balance issue with some of the early VK304s. All "5.0L" and "4.9L" onwards are 304, EVEN though it says 308 on the Block AND Crank up until VP II Motors. VR I Motors had the 308 on the block changed to 5.0, and VR II Onwards had nothing on the side of the block, as they could have been either 5.7 or 5.0.
It is entirely possible that the car is another sort of government car, unless it has the original log book. It could have been RTA or Vicroads car etc.

14-01-10, 10:29 GMT+10#11 i paid 1000 for the car the shell was a rusted out ****box so it went to the dump minus the motor and box tail shaft was from the same car but modded to fit the vk diff. when asking DOT here in qld they said the motor was in a vl cop car first regoed in qld thats all the info i have.
now when i first started the motor the cam was stuffed so replaced the cam straight away with a standard crow cam but now wish i had used a slightly bigger cam in the first place

Correct about the block all of them still had 308 on the side.
Research about the VJ is Wrong,I am looking at my athenticty papers from HDT and my block is VJ, Wagon is an 87 Calais sport build no 4106 Ours has the L34 rods and rollor rockers from HDT as well as quite a few extra opitions.
It is extremly hard to pick a HDT block or motor unless you have some relevent paper work to prove it,As there are so many parts that can be brought off ebay,eg heads, distributor, manufold and extractors.Diff should be a GU4=3.08 ratio

14-01-10, 20:08 GMT+10#13 Thats the thing the VL V8 had going for it, it had the bigger valves, 955 inlet manifold and was unleaded, sure it was sh1t stock but it was easily fixed.
The 308 became the 304 when the series 2 VK was introduced, the blue VH 308 was a ripper, everyone loves a blue motor.

15-01-10, 07:47 GMT+10#14 I thought the block stamp changed from 308 to 5.0 on the VN? You learn something every day.

Sorry I must of mis understood,Are you say engine blocks starting with this prefix are not HDT??As hdt in the end were sourceing there cars from dealerships that had strong tries to Brock. So what ever prefix the cars in stock had they ended up with.

15-01-10, 15:07 GMT+10#17 All Holden, HDT and HSV VL V8 engine blocks have a VJ prefix with the exception being the two homologation Group A models which used the VW and VP prefixes.
