I looked at a Holden Commodore Sedan 2002 which was going for $7000. I met the guy and felt that he was a bit dodgy as he didn't want to give his name and said he was selling the car on behalf of his mate. I did manage to take a look at his drivers license, got his address and he took a $100 deposit from me to hold the car for 2 days for the full payment. On more research on vic roads vehicle status check it came out the car is not stolen however it is a there is an inspected write off on it. Registration Status: CURRENT UNTIL 03/08/2010 Written-Off Status: INSPECTED-WRITE-OFF Encumbrance Status: NO-ENCUMBRANCE Vehicle Make: HOLDEN Stolen Status: NOT-STOLEN The guy is ready to give an RWC and negotiate a bit on the price. However what i want to know is : 1. Could it be stolen and just not yet reported?? The guy seemed too dodgy as at first he claimed that it was his wife's car however he changed the story later saying it was one of his mates car and he did not want to give out his details. He was very pushy to sell it on the spot. 2. He seems like a mechanic to me just trying to make some quick $$ by buying and repairing a written off car. Is is suggestible to buy a car like this?? I test drove the car and it seemed to be good condition .Body of the car was in good condition new tyres and pretty clean under the hood. Thanks in advance for your feedback as i would really like to know if it is a good buy??

wouldnt u report a stolen car from the moment you find out? not leave it for when u have time. You done the vicroads check so what more information do you want. Its an inspected write off. If you dont feel comfortable about buying i suggest not buying it.

Don't buy it. Plain and simple. Your asking for trouble. I would stay way clear of it. I'm sure you could find another VX commodore for around that price.

ring him and tell him u know its a repaired write off and see wot he says about it. and if worse comes to worse think yourself lucky u only lost $100

I'd also ask him for proof of ownership. He can't sell a car on behalf of a mate. Who will sign the transfer papers? It smells fishy.

Might be a small loss but you'll get over it. Could always ask him how long he's had the car? Also any history of crash's etc. May catch him out? Then you have half a leg to stand on for a return deposit. Good luck tho.

It's buyer beware.

As positive as always. Always worth a try. Yes its only $100 but better to make him feel bad and hope he hands it back over. Usually dosent happen cos deposits a deposit. oh well

i agree with all above posts, if you like the car how ever.. go and talk to him face to face, ask if its ever been in an accident and see how he reacts if he says no you can ask, why it was a write off? on a personal note if it was me ide forget about it.. and dont worry yourself on the $100, i can understand that for most people thats alot of money to just throw away but think how much more you'd be throwin away if you buy it and turns out needing work done? either way good luck with your choice mate

Don't buy it....As above, $100 is nothing. Ask for your deposit back, if he won't give it to you, consider yourself lucky that's all you gave him. Hold onto your money, there is plenty available in that price range and you don't want the headache of a repaired, written-off car. They are never the same after a big hit and a vehicle that age doesn't get written off for no reason.

Another scenario, the tags and identity belong to a car that was a repairable write off but it wasn't repaired. instead the Identity got transferred onto a stolen car and is now known as a rebirthed car. Corsa

being an inspected write off i doubt it's a rebirth, inspections in nsw at least look for this type of thing i think it's more likely a dodgy repair and being sold by a backyard repairer/dealer. I've heard of and seen exactly the same thing done many times over
