Im converting my 25 spline single spinner to a 28 splline lsd. i've installed an lsd center, gears and pinion from an r31 but when i try to install the long axle the axle seems to be about 20mm long. wtf have i done wrong?? the numbers on the axles are correct i think 950 and 951 anyone had this problem before? any ideas?

The LSD has two splined section on either side where the axles enter. You need to ensure these are aligned, otherwise you'll have exactly this problem. You need to remove the centre, dummy fit the axles into it to ensure the splines, are aligned, then put it back in without turning the internal spider gears. When you look into where the axles enter the centre, you'll see there are two sections to the splines, that can move independantly of each other.

Sure you havent got VN Axles? they are 25.4mm longer than VL axles. Actually, since your converting from 25 to 28 spline put them side by side, are they the same length?

Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

You have VN axles. Only explanation. Perfect measurements. If they were VL, they would be exactly the same length as your 25 spline ones. "0578" is a BW78 part number, not related to length.

but 950 and 951 are vlt axles so they should be the right ones. vn ones are 955 and 956 or sumfin like that

But if they're the wrong lengths, then it doesn't matter what number is stamped on them.

im 98% sure the axle lengths are correct as they match up with measurments i found on another site Quote: Originally Posted by www.fbekholden.com next axles, and these measurments are not the total length of the axles but more to give you a difference comparison.... on the commodore axles is a tapered roller bearing then after that is a big metal sleeve used to make extra sure the bearing wont go anywhere i am measuring from the edge of that sleeve as its easy and all the outer bits from there to the brake should be the same anyways. axles: VL short - 600mm VL long - 700mm VN short - 620mm VN long - 715mm . mine measure 600 and 700 as above, i also found overall measurements on CT somewhere and these also matched my axles. I need someone to give me a measurment of the spline input bit on the lsd centre ( drivers side ). mine measures 90mm ffrom the bearing face to thrustplate. i would like to rule the centre out as the problem before i look too hard into the axles

the 28 spline axes you have a VN mate, sorry to say. they are 1" longer each side than vl axles. as 5spdvl said, if they measure longer then your 25 spline vl axles, doesnt matter whats number is stamped on them they are the wrong ones for your diff.

lol how lucky am i, i have no idea if its the correct diff. i dont think it had any tags either.... the overall measurement was about 1400mm which i think is correct but maybe the pumpkins off center by 20mm im not in my happy place anymore

1400mm is the correct width. I don't have any axles or housings with me at the moment, so I can't take any measurements. Post up photos of everything you have; if you're certain the axles are right, then you may have the wrong housing, which is going to cause more problems.

as my post has been deleted i will say again the problem is using the skline lsd (and perhaps housing???) ,as the axels are vlt unlike what 5 speed and psi wagon would have u think... the skylines have a different setup with their axles and housing like the vn just a bit shorter than the vl so yeah the big 1 would not fit if this was the case cheers steve

^wtf are you on? you cant use skyline axles Fullstop or the housing in a vl. besides them being shorter, they are 4 stud. the centre is perfectly fine to use in a vl diff. your post was probably deleted so it wouldnt mislead the poor guy, who's been sold the wrong axles.

i don't see how they can have vlt 28 spline part numbers 950 and 951 and be vn axles? axles must be right....either housing length or installation is whats causing the dramas

Yep as Psi Wagon said, R31 housing wouldnt even bolt up as the mounts are different due to the size etc. btw there are no posts deleted by mods in this thread Quote: Originally Posted by Nukz i don't see how they can have vlt 28 spline part numbers 950 and 951 and be vn axles? axles must be right....either housing length or installation is whats causing the dramas Maybe the numbers on the end of the axle are for something else completely different ! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

psi go and get your eyes checked magoo i clearly didnt say they were skyline axels as i know they came from a 4 pinion vlt diff derrr!!!! he said he doesnt even know wat housing it is so he must be fitting it out of the car obviously unless you know what your talking about keep to yourself and amuse yourself elsewhere. wankel wat housing/ wat lsd are you attemping to fit???

Hence why I've asked for pictures so we know exactly what we're dealing with.
