hey guys,
Im looking at converting an N/a RB30 VL 5 speed to a V8 and auto. The V8s from factory are quite hard to come across for cheap and in the condition i want.(im chasing an old ****ter as its getting stripped and re done as a project).
Now im not 100% certain on what engine to run. Ive seen that other thread asking about the 304/308 or LS1 and thats basically what im trying to decide aswell.(hopefully this thread wont turn bad like that one hehe)
How much am i going to have to replace to convert it to a V8? Would the cost of swapping in a 304/308 be close to the cost of converting to an LS1, therefor making the LS1 a better choice? Like am i going to need a V8 speedo, radiator and fan setup, brake setup, ect
Is it possible to get one of these engines in and fully setup(e.g. including new box, diff, exhaust, upgrade cooling ect) for under $15K? If so, is there going to be much change left to do some work to the thing and up the power?
Using second hand motor and box, you will get the ls1 in with everything connected and working for 15K. BUT this doesnt really take into account motor mods, 9inch diffs and 4K staino exhausts and shiz.

Excuse my stupidity here, but can both be made into a 355? Also with the auto boxes is there much difference between a stage 2 & 3 shift kit? Is 3 fully manualised and 2 still auto but better shifts?

If i got the holden V8 am i still going to have to do a 'full conversion' as such? Like i would with the LS1. If so then the LS1 would be the better option if im already going to all that trouble yes? Also how much of the 6cyl running gear is usable or is it still a wipe everything and build up fresh like it would be with the LS1?
I would rather get a VL V8 to start with but they are rare as hens teeth. Well in the condition im after anyway.
im thinking of doing the same thing with my vl im sick of mechanics over charging me for work to my vl turbo and still nothing to show.at least 5ltrs are reliable.
sorry to bud in.but if my vl is wired up to a microtech and i want to convert it to efi v8 am i going to be looking at lots to convert it?i already know i can make a killing of my eng accesories etc from my current mtr and lets face it vl turbos never stay on the rd long.either that or dump a 2.5 in it
wilson - yes both can, but injected 304 or 355 is going to be cheaper, more power, more reliable and much easier to do than a carbie fed 308 or 355 main reason being that you have all the injection lines and pump ec.. already there in the car ie you can use some of the 6cyl gear for the 5ltr.
Im really liking the sound of the injected 355. With these $10K-$15K workshop quotes, where does most of that go? Reason being, im sure i could handle ripping out the old gear and fitting the new one, but wiring it up ect and actually getting it running i would leave to a shop. Would this save me much money doing the actual swap myself and leave the rest to them?
So what does the injected 304 come out of? Im guessing i would need a new K frame ect as the one for the RB30 would be no good? Will the standard 5L ecu handle things or will i need something aftermarket or even a piggy back setup? (if i can afford to go the 355 one day that is).
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
I know witht he LS1 there's a lot of expensive conversion bits associated with it, in particular the starter motor relocation kit (over $1K). LS1 starter fouls on the VL steering shaft, so it has to go on the passenger side. The exhaust would be such a ******* given the size of the motor compared to the size of the bay.

Check out the sticky thread in this section

Yeah i seen that sticky after i posted that question. I just read it and it was VERY helpful.
Bit offtopic here, but im after opinions on what to do first? Either the conversion or the paint and panel. Im leaning towards the paint and panel because if i do the conversion first that means ill be pulling the 3L out, 5L in. Then the 5L out and then back in again when i do the respray. Also is there much benifit to doing a bare metal respray? The VL im working on has some rust around both windscreens and one door and im thinking i should strip it completely to make sure i fox every bit of it. Dont want rust bubbles coming out after i spend $5K+ on a respray.
Oh also, can you still(or ever?) buy genuine walkinshaw body kits? Want a full kit that i know will fit properly and is good quality too.
Sorry for all the random questions haha.

Why would the Brock Shop sell HSV kits???
No you can't buy genuine kits, even second hand they are hard to come by and very expensive. Try Fibremaster
Doesn't really matter what you do first, just make sure you paint the bay when you do the engine conversion to save you pulling out the motor twice
Have a look at my car thread, it might give you some inspiration

how was your body kit up close? Im want to make sure i dont get some cheap quality one with ripples in the panels ect.
also ive seen your car many times, it ****ing hot as. This may sound weird but ive actually made love to a photo of it...
*the above may or may not be true*
just checked out Fibremaster and $4K for a full kit!! thats a kick in the testies for now.

A Walkie kit is going to cost, the better the quality the more it will cost. Then getting it hung is going to be the next step that is going to cost. When I was looking for one back in 03-04, 5k for the kit and 5k to have it sprayed and hung.
I know someone who can do the paint job for cash so that can drop that abit i spose. Is there much effort in fitment of the kit? Like ive heard of kits not fitting properly due to wrong specs when made ect.
