THEY are speed freaks in more ways than one. Australian drag racing is in the midst of a recreational drug crisis with at least eight drivers testing positive to banned substances since February.
A staggering 10 per cent of drivers tested up to June returned positive results for recreational drugs such as speed and marijuana.
Another two, including one of the the sports biggest stars, tested positive to illicit substances on Saturday night at the Nationals - the sport's showcase event - at Western Sydney International Dragway.
"These machines get up to 500km/h,'' said a drag racing insider.
"It is so dangerous that some of these blokes are off their heads driving these cars.
"It is a horrific accident waiting to happen. It is a massive concern and it needs to be stopped before someone gets hurt.''
Australian Drag Racing Association CEO Tony Thornton warned the sports governing body would continue to crack down on illicit drug use.
"Anyone testing positive for any substance is immediately disqualified from the event and will then be counselled,''
Thornton said. "We are not taking a moral standpoint here but trying to stamp it out because it is an occupational safety hazard.''

It's simple, stupidity. It's hard enough to drive at 60 ks when you're off the planet, imagine 300+.
I'm not altogether surprised though, considering the types you see on the track sometimes.

Probably only thing putting some drivers behind the wheel is a bit of gear after the massive hours they have to endure to get there cars going, I can imagine a fair portion of the industry has some ties to the drug world in one way or another.

^^^ for sure but its the companys that establish them selfs with the extra cash flow but the smart ones are the ones that get out of it once they are settled then turn to hard work to keep the dollars rolling

20-09-09, 20:46 GMT+10#10 To be honest, I know people who have taken drugs for so long, and in certain circumstances for so long, they couldn't function normally without it. Lets say your a speed junkie, you take a little bit throughout the day almost everyday of your life, these guys peak off their heads without it.
People are stressing about guys racing their cars once every few months off their head, in a dead straight line with a ton of safety gear. . . . Now think about truck drivers. . . . On the road, in 50 tonne killing machines driving 1000's of klm's a week beside our families, children and friends, not only off their dial but probably sleep deprived for 3-4 days, and realise that this is such a grain of sand in the ocean compared to the bigger picture.
I do not under any circumstances condone the activity, I would never partake in it, however if people want something to stress over, 10 people drag racing in 6 months off chops is nowhere near as scary as the 1000's of truckies busting their ass with 100+ hours a week on our roads......

^ spot on.
@wagonpsi
Who cares? even if they crash while they are high, its still a life lost that could have been provented Then there will be a massive crackdown by the government, and will turn into more unwanted attention on fast cars and drag racing. Track or not.
@6boost
While you saying 10 people drag racing one day in those 6 months, each time one of those 10 people go down the track, thats putting innocent peoples life in danger. Noone should die to others stupidity.
Anyone that does this drag racing, driving on road etc, shame on you.
A license comes with responsability.

21-09-09, 01:37 GMT+10#20 what if someone has been racing for ages off chops and then they say no, you cant do drugs and drive, and then they crash coz they arent used to it. i dunno, amphetamines make you focus really hard. sure its hard to focus on the street and people miss lights changing and kill people. but on the strip its just like green is go then you stop... just saying, dont think its THAT dangerous, especialy since some people have more controll over the little things while they are driving.
now if you said people were doing a line of 2C-E and then racing trying to dodge the elephant that just climbed out of the track id be worried.
