hey guys im looking at a VL to buy and i asked the owner to send me the vin number so i could check on what it was from the factory he sent me -
AVL027430M any vin check i do comes back with nothing is this even the vin number??? any help would be great... and what is this number??? cheers guys..
its is a real vin..
but most online checks use the newer vin's and they have more numbers... unfortunately VL's are to old..
ive had the same prob because i wanted to find out if my vl was a chaser since ide been told it very well could be.. never found out.
also you have to pay for a check.. theres alot of work involved and no1 will do it for free.
if you just want to find out where it was built original gearbox paint etc then there is lots of people on here that can de code it for you but you will need the full number code from the painted plate on the firewall.
i think the 'M' at the end means it was built in Melbourne.. mine has an 'A' at the end and ive been told it made in Adelaide.
ok thats all i have and yeah i was trying to use the vin calculator from this site..
if any1 can tell me anything from this vin i would be greatful!
cheers DVO_17 for the heads up..
already said it is mate.
i no its silly but i think that even tho they ask for a vin in the translators they actually mean the chassis number. and i think that same number should be on the block aswell.
ring up the guy that own's the car and ask him for the 14 character number on the body coloured plate above the compliance plates, thats the one you want. type that into the de-coder if that don't work, i dont know wat else i can suggest. good luck
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
go to this http://www.vlturbo.com/vin_decoder.php
and dont try the usall AVL code, its too short its only 10 u need 14 characters , its the other code on the top identification plate not the bottom 2 identification plates.
type mine in and see, 8k196hl269443l

the number you quoted is the cars chassis number which is also found on the LH strut tower
the number you need for the VIN calculator on here you'll find on the painted plate on the cars firewall above the 2 silver ones , such as 8x198..........
cheers mate thats the one i was trying to use will get onto the guy im buying car off and get that number.. not fussed just wanna know what it once was.. lol
Hey Guys,
I have a query, (real number left out, call me paranoid..
I have the 8K196GL24901** number from the small plate, there is a different number on the strut tower - AVL0439**M so far so good, but on the other silver compliance plate, there is a different AVL number - AVL 0449**A.
Are the 2 AVL numbers supposed to be the same?
Are they also meant to be the same number sequence as the last part of the VIN on the small plate? (ie should the 8K196GL24901** part be the same as the AVL0439**M number on the strut tower??
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
The two AVL numbers should be the same. The VIN (L+6 digits) should match the 6 digits used in the Body number. Do the digits you have left out of the two AVL numbers match each other?
Corsa
Yes mate, the VIN L+6 digits is the same as the Body number on the left plate, are those 6 digits supposed to be the same as the AVL numbers too?
and no, the 2 AVL numbers are completly different.
The AVL (Chassis) numbers should match each other and are not the same as the two Body Numbers which match also.
Do the dates between the two larger plates match each other?
Corsa
its quite possible its been in a decent crash and the inner guard has been changed. would explain the different body number on the tower compared to the id tag.
ide still be pretty suss about it
Yeah, I thought about that, but I have it stripped down to a bare shell, and there are no signs of that, it even had the GMH stickers on the inner guard when i took it off.
The plates have been taken off before, because there were drill marks under the rivet heads.
Anyway, when we originally bought it last year, Vicroads registered it no problems, they just used the number on the strut tower, and didnt even look at the plates.
I only noticed when I took the plates off before getting the shell sandblasted, so i went to Vicroads with plates and rego papers in hand, and after copping an earfull from the toad behind the counter for taking the plates off, they said to re-register it, it may need a Vic police number.
So i trotted over to the police station and asked them the same thing, and they said they wouldnt do a VP number unless either It looked stolen, or if Vicroads asked them to.
The cop also rang a branch in Melbourne that deals with VP numbers, and they said that it was quite common for VLs to have differnet numbers, and that I should ring Holden and Just confirm the manuafacture date, which I did, and the dates on both plates are right, its just a different AVL number on the plate to the strut tower.
They said the vehicle would have the exact same compliance rules as the plate states, so it should be OK.
I guess i will just have to see what happens when I try to re-register it !!
From the sounds of it the three plates are a set but are still not correct. The cops you dealt with wouldn't have a clue what they were looking at if they think that it's quite common for the numbers to be different. PM me if you want more info on how to work out what is what as i don't think Holden have steered you in the right direction either.
