Technically it is illegal Mo.
You could spray it black (VK/VL style) and see how you go. There isnt much chance they would pick up on an engine number's date. There's always the chance though.
I'm sure you could find a newer block... without telling you what to do I'm sure you could work something out.
was hoping u would be the 1 2 post brett, mm yer the block is black, but i see wat u mean and i get wat u mean plus i obviously would wanna get the motor registered 2 the car... its either that or an injected 304

Subtle
Like most other RTA issues it really can depend on who you get on the day, i know someone who used an early block in a later car, but showed the engine had all the relevant heads/manifold/carby/polution gear and it was passed no worries.

There are lots floating around, depends if you get the indian **** at frankston in his suit going over everything with a fine tooth comb. He even went to the book to see if HQ's came with 350's when I was doing an engine change!
I'd jam it in, give it a go and more than likely they will pass it. Usually its just one of the chicks that goes out there and wants to see the engine number.
Technically it is NOT illegal, not sure where you pull your info from. Emmission control and pollution requirements have to comply with either the casting date of the block or the build date of the vehicle, whichever comes later.
It falls under Australian Design Rules in direct relation to the Environmental Protection Agency Act.
For example:
Cat converters were introduced to Australia in 1986. Any pre-1986 built car does not have to run them.
If you fit a post 1986 engine to a pre-1986 built car you must run cats, so fitting a VN 5ltr engine to a VK would require the installation of cats. Fitting VN heads and injection to a VK with its original engine (or 1 casted prior to 1986) would not require the installation of cats.
So in the case of the original poster, as long as pollution requirements comply to the date of the car, then there will be no means of rejection by your relevant road authority. If you are concerned they will knock back your application on the basis that the engine fitted is built prior to the car being built then ensure you have all supporting documentation in regards to ADR and EPA compliance to back your claim.

THIS (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/5C946861-35D8-42CF-A1A6-BA00F3D3A104/0/VSI20.pdf) is where the information is found that I am going off. It's under the vehicle standards information on the vicroads website.
Ill quote it for you.

The engine in my car is fitted with emission controls, can I fit an engine from an older vehicle to it?
A. No. The replacement engine must be of the same age or newer, and must meet all emission standards applicable to the vehicle's and engine's date of manufacture.
So assuming these laws apply in WA where Mo is he must have all emissions equipment hooked up to what VL's came with if he's using a VL engine or the emission equipment hooked up to a later dated engine.
had a look around on the WA dpi site pretty useless but either just get it regoed as a stock car or do it and try taking it over ask joelah he recently did his with the rb25
Fair enough Brett. I guess when a VicRoads website gives information, you would tend to believe it.
Unfortunately for them, ADR's and EPA laws are more binding legislation than any guideline dreamed up by some curry at VicRoads, which is why if you present the relevant documentation, they cannot refuse. Kind of like how chrome cupped gauges on the bonnet are illegal under the guise of VSI, yet under ADR laws they are legal.
Having said that, most people at VicRoads aren't switched on and know the specific ins and out of every car, especially one that is 22 years old. They will see that a VL came fitted with a V8 option, check the engine number and see its a Commodore V8 and that will be pretty much it.
Those VSI's should be thrown out the window, as you can put any motor in any car as long as it is properly certified by a VASS inspector or engineer, pretty much goes for everything on a car lol, as long as it all comply's to ADR and passes emmission requirements, then there is really nothing stopping you with anything.
Anyways apoligies for getting off the subject.
Can you pm me the info where you found chrome cups to be illegal?
If you got the inspector there who was a pain in the ass they could do you for it... I've already shown you the info in regards to it being illegal. So saying that they cannot refuse you is incorrect.
There's all these rules and its lucky for us that not many people at vicroads know anything about vehicles or have much common sense.
I know of a monaro that has an engine older than the car haha.
ive decided 2 just go the 304 efi route, less hassels and easier 2 get passed here..
malpasso ive had many cars over the pits over the years but none with an engine conversion.. going newer is easier then going older...
