guys i need a bit of assistance with some ecu queries
cut a long story short im up to picking an ECU unit for my VL , and i was looking at microtech lt12, obviously everyone has had a vast opinion on the microtech being goood and bad
bit ive heard that it can only be tuned in 500rpm increments , were as i was told vipec and autronic is less , which then will get me a more better and smoother tune, but in saying that i dont want really want to be paying 3k for a ecu when i can get the same out of microtech for half the price , but i do want a good ecu also
what do you guys think?
information on this unit would be very helpful!
mate i have the ltx12. i have had dramas with it before. go to a microtech speciaist to tune it if you do. if i had my time again id go an autronic. my bro just had a autronic installed and tuned in his 25det vl for 2k i think (if not less).
Personal preference is wat it comes down to i guess and everyone is gonna have a different opinion..
good luck
I have a vipec v88 in myn and the idle and everday driveabilty is awesome plus performance and other options you have with it. vipec do a plug in aswell which is like.. 1600. By the look of your sig you deal with jpc. Pretty sure they are vipec dealers.

You get what you pay for.
Yes microtech is every 500rpm inc, But they also have very good interpolation between cells. But tuning full throtth is easy, Tuning for emissions, and fuel econemy, and having enough outputs for your application is another story
Does Microtech have adequate over run fuel cut (where the ecu shuts the injectors at 0% throttle, over idle to save fuel when coasting)
NO
Does Microtech have enough outputs for, boost control, launch control, trans brake control, NOS, PWM Idle control, 2nd maps for different fuel & Boost control. Even have a map for boost over speed, so you can run lower boost and lower wheel speeds to help wheel spin.... All at the same time?
NO
Can you change the trigger settings in the microtech to not look at the 360deg increments, to help the timimng Jitter that plagues the RB30 at certain harmonics where the timimng belts gets very agressive and causes the ignition timing to jump any where from 10-30 deg, almost on peak torque
NO
Does mictotech even have a propper timing map...... You know the 16x16 or 20x20 or 16x128....... Na, It has 2 timing lines...... one is correction over boost and the other correction over RPM...... Not very good if you need to run massive advance at light loads and hardly any at heavy loads, Especially if you need to pull 3 deg at peak torque at wide open throttle, and then put 9 degress back in after that, but still maintaine a flat timing curve at light throttles at peak torque.
They are great computers for certain applications. Its just if they are great for your application you should be asking.

Good point there ANK, I have seen Carby's run similar MPH, so does that make them as good as a Microtech?
LOL, Just playin with ya mate. Horses for courses. They are great for certain applications. Just like all computers and even ignition systems......
Ask any one who has tried to run Toyota Reluctor Crank and cam sensors with a big output CDI system. Some will do it, some struggle

im heading towards the microtech lt10 .... as ank said before both seem to get the job done and ive heard endless vlt running great numbers with this ecu ,
off memory maatouks WHONXT has gone 9.5 with this ecu , MKDJET has gone into the mid 10s also???
as for street drving / fuel eccomony , if i was worried about that i would stick to a standard setup lol
Nick, have you considered, Cold Start, and all the other things that the microtech isnt famous for??
i have a similar thread i've started..........do a search on it

lol im not to worried about the cold starts .... u knw more then most people i hardly drive the car lmaoooo
the car isnt getn upgraded to be smooth and stuff , im after the power lol

i know dude, but i'd kick my car in, if it was a pig to drive, irrespective of what i'd use it for.

As I have said, you will find for the budget conscious, and for the full power house stuff, Thats not a drama. For the people that are looking at these things, They are a fantastic system.
The microtechs I tune, Cold start is great, Hot start is great. Even Light throttle is lean, full throttle is rich and everything in between is exactly where it needs to be.
If this is all that you need out of an engine management system, then yes Microtech will do that, without a drama. No one is denying that.
How ever, for a system for fuel economy and emissions (decel enleanment), inputs, outputs, cylinder trims, closed loop Exhaust gas temp vs fuel, closed loop Wide band AFR, Full automatic transmission control... well you get my drift. If these are not important, then thats cool.
Soooo.... back to my original comment....... They are great for certain applications.
Actually, Ill throw one out there that I use for a really clever idle control. Just for a real word example.
Tuning an engine, any road petrol engine. Massive cams, no idle control. Still need the thing to start and run like a factory car, but the customer cant/doesnt want to spend the extra bucks for idle control.
Now, What I do and very few systems can do it correctly. Run ignition timing at idle at 0 deg at full engine temp. This will make the idle very low. Wind up the idle bypass untill the idle is at reasonable level. Fix the mixtures (as they will now be lean due to more air and the same fuel).
Now, in a good system I make another table external of my timing map that will add ignition timing totally dependant of coolant temp, and engine load.
So at 10 deg coolant temp and say 20% load (idle) the computer will add 20 deg timing. This combined with the all ready excessively opened idle bypass valve (from setting the timing to 0 when hot) makes the engine very stable when cold. Then i set the table to start to pull timing the hotter the engine gets until it get to opperating temp, where it will be 0 deg adv again.
Now this can be done with a simple timing vs coolant temp. But lets say you have a fight with your MRS, dirty as, jump is your freshly built RB30.... go ra ra vroom... engine is 20deg C you floor it, with 20 deg too much timing and smash a piston. Now you can say.... Id never do that. I always warm my engine up....... But believe me it happens.
So you need to pull timing back to normal, as the engine load increases even under these cold starting conditions.
This is the absolute basic of what you miss out on with a system that limits your control.
When you start to think of NOS, and controlling by PWM to suit wheel speed, or engine speed.... or individual wheel speeds, to pull timing or boost when wheel spin is detected, or an ecu that knows if your under 1kmph, and push the throttle to over 75% to activate launch control, and thats knows not to run over 24 psi until you are traveling over 28kmph or even a system that knows if you are using E85 or pump fuel and changes the map to suit.
Thats the sort of control that makes an engine management system, Not how fast it runs down the drag strip.
