hey guys, i just installed my 35/40 1.06 rear on a high mount manifold with an external gate. The gate only has a 7 pound spring in it at the moment, but the car is going to be tuned tomoz and i have a quick question. What noise does the wastegate make when it opens? it's plumbed back into the exhaust and when i drive it, when it gets up to 7 -8 pound, i get this loud grinding noise, sorta sounds like i'm flicking up stones under the car. Is this the wastegate opening? i've only heard wastegates with screama pipes. Sorry for the dumb question but it's doing my head in. Thanks a lot.

i assume it has an aftermarket ecu of course? has anyone played with the tune at all since this new turbo has gone on? (and what turbo/setup was on it before)

pinging?

it dosn't sound like pinging to me, it sounds like its coming from exhaust, auto, tailshaft maybe? but ive had it in the air and there is nothing rubbing and everything looks good. what is it suppossed to sound like when it opens

A plumbed back gate will generally sound like a faint screamer out your exhaust, maybe a faint squeal from the bay, to me it sounds like it could be oil supply issues or bearing issues (in the turbo) but its brand new so you wouldnt think so..

it sorta sounds like a dull screama, but should you hear it so loud inside the cabin? the ecu is tuned for the old setup, a hi flow t3 running 16 psi making roughly 220rwkw.. could this have anything to do with it?

You shouldn't be boosting it untuned unless you want to pay for a new motor...that 35/40 will be flowing a hell of a lot more air than your old highflow.

Sounds like detonation to me!! Detonation, also known as pinging, pinking, or knocking, is a serious motor destroying event. It sounds different on many cars but it can sound like slapping metal wires against the motor, a rattle in the dash, shaking popcorn kernels in a coffee can, and when it’s real bad it sounds like marbles in a coffee can. It has a rhythmic sound much like a diesel (technically its very similar to a diesel). When you hear detonation GET OFF THE GAS IMMEDIATELY! Detonation is not the same as pre-ignition although they often occur at the same time. Detonation can be caused by too much spark advance, high IATs, lean mixture, dry air, high ECTs, low octane, etc. It occurs when the spark ignited flame front compresses the reaming air fuel mixture till it reaches critical temperature and pressure to auto ignite the mixture on the other side of the cylinder. The two flame fronts then collide with a giant explosion causing the audible knock sound. The cylinder temperatures and pressures increase drastically beyond the normal combustion temperatures and pressures causing burned holes in the pistons, bent or broken rods, damaged crankshaft bearings, and complete and total destruction.

If it sounds like stones hitting metal +1 for pinging. Stop boosting until your tune brah

Turn the radio up... problem sovled lol... I say pinging too, let us know how the tune goes...

thanks guys, yeah i think you all are probably correct.. it makes sense. I only heard the noise for a second and got straight off it, so hopefully no damage has been done.. let you know how i go. thanks again

could be an exhaust leak?

You cant hear 90% of pinging. But for your sake, hope it isn't, but as has already been said... Thats what it sounds like.
