RB30 after VL - Was anything revised or changed on it?

Hi all, Was just wanting to know if there was any revisions or changes to the RB30 after the VL ended production. Reason I ask, we have a 1995 Nissan patrol with a carby fed RB30 in it. The owner cooked it when the top radiator hose outlet broke off (plastic) Anyway he got a replacement motor. The water pump needs replacing on it, and the one off the original motor is no good either. So we thought a VL six water pump will fit. But not the case The water pumps are different. The pump on the patrol motor also has some of the timing belt housing cast onto it. The bottom timing belt cover is also a bit different to a VL one. So, when did this change to the water pumps happen? My guess is in 1989, because that is the build date of the replacement motor. Would Series 3 R31 skylines have the same difference?

Geez, that's a good question. Water pumps are pretty cheap, why don't you just get a replacement Patrol RB30 water pump?

Yeah, well thats what we'll probably have to do. Will probably be a little more expensive with the extra casting on it. Was just a bit surprised thats all, I thought all RB30's were all pretty much the same. Did not think componants like water pumps would be different.

As did I. I would expect perhaps change to the intake manifold, such as extra mounting points etc for the carby set up, but not something obscure like the water pump! Would make an interesting tech thread.

Yeah, Inlet manifold is totally different to the EFi manifold on the VL's and R31's but is a straight bolt on to the head. The cylinder head is the still the same as the VL, right down to the cutouts / ports for the (non existant) fuel injectors. The block is the same, Sump is different to clear the patrols front diff. Exhaust manifold is the same except for a small pipe that goes in just above the manifold flange for the EGR system the carby models have. The 95 model motor also has a ratcheting oil filler cap to prevent overtightening. Which I thought was quite good as the standard caps can be a bugger to undo if overtightened. Best of all it can be used on a VL, screws straight in. It also uses V belts, instead of the flat ribbed belts the VL's have. Apart from that its basically the same as an RB30 in a VL. Except for this different design water pump and oil pump cover which have a raised edge cast into them to form part of the lower timing belt case / cover.

How much power is a carby RB30 putting out?

They were only about 95 - 100 kW at the flywheel.

id say dump the carby rb30 and put a nice EFI rb30 NA or turbo varient. i know a bloke who droped a rb30et without too much hassle.

Here are some pics of the carby RB30. View of the different water pump The patrol has since been fixed and is back with its owner. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Due to being in a different vehicle the positions of things like the power steering pump and alternator may have had to have been in slightly different postions for clearance reasons, necessitating that the drive belts be further/or closer to the basic engine. I wouldn't really expect that a water pump for one vehicle, be exactly the same as on another, even if it is the same basic engine. Do RB20/25/26/30 all use the exact same alternator or water pump or power steering pump or a/c pump?

No, they don't. Perhaps a change in the water pump pulley, but something being so close to the block is unlikely to change dramatically. The sump is interesting; it would have a different pickup as well (rear facing). Might be a cheap replacement for people looking to drag?

I was thinking similar, except I'm thinking conversion wise such as RB30 into a HQ, might work and be a hell of a lot cheaper then the CRS sump conversion!

To clear the K frame?

yep Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ah yeah. Good thinking. I wonder if it's clear the VL K frame and steering rack?

The 3 litre VL has either a 70 amp Bosch or Hitachi alternator fitted , the RB25DE package I bought 5 years ago had a 90 amp mitsubishi unit fitted which really pumped out the amps. (it was from a 1994 model R33 Skyline), I've heard that the RB20 & early RB25's had a smaller alternator. When the Mitsubishi unit blew up I fitted the guts from a 85 amp Bosch alternator from a VN Commodore into the 70 amp housing and used that. The water pump on the RB25 motor is different too , with one less bolt hole I think. The CAS unit on the series 3 R31 Skyline I think was also changed I'm sure Holden used a different P/S and A/C pump in the VL to the R31 Skyline , the front pulley off the VL accommodated a V belt for the A/C and removeable P/S pulley , the R33 pulley I have fitted to the RB30 in my car accommodates a ribbed belt for the A/C and the P/S pulley is moulded in with the rest of the pulley.
