Just picked up a 210amp CIG Transmig.
Going to give a shot at making up some exhaust and intercooler piping.
Was curious to how people go about smoothing the inside of the weld once the pipes have been welded together. If the join was close to an end you could get a die grinder in there.
But what about if a long pipe was welded on, there would be no way to reach the weld on the inside correct?

fill the pipe with sand and shake it. will get rid of any loose welds that exist

how good can you weld? if your careful, you wont need to clean out the inside...

lol...not quite
shouldnt need to cllean it up if your a good welder

if its straight piece, a long rat tail file will work. if curved, not a great deal u can do...other than learn to adjust your welder to make sure that penetration into the metal is enough / correct.

if you but em up nice and close with like a 1mm gap you shouldnt have any problems. nothing major anyway

mate heard from heaps of fabricators thats how its done. if the two adjoining faces arent 100% flush, theres bound to be some loose weld around the void, especially if your a noob

14-06-09, 13:47 GMT+10#11 or purge weld it maybe like they do with stainless tig welding, you put a regulated low pressure into the pipe and block off the other end. works with tig it may work with mig? just a thought

14-06-09, 16:25 GMT+10#12 with this pipe u will only need a 1mm gap if that for peno, if u can weld pretty good make the gap a touch smaller and burn it in hot so u r sure ive got the peno and if u move quick enuff it wont burn right through and be an ugly thing...... lol

14-06-09, 18:46 GMT+10#15 yeah just butt it hard up and put some weld around it. i wouldnt get too caught up trying to get perfect peno. your not welding pressure vessels here

14-06-09, 19:03 GMT+10#16 you could always just stop start if you have to, that way you know you wont burn through and its easy to clean up.

14-06-09, 22:40 GMT+10#18 Get the two joints to butt up perfectly without gaps and V-grove the the ends if you know what i mean, and you shouldn't need any inside finishing. Practice on a few straight bits so you can see how much penetration you have with your settings.
