Hey guys just wondering how much you need to spend to get a pretty good pair of splits?? Im looking for SQ, good clarity etc...
Ive already got a budget system, 2 sony 2-ways up front which i paid about $100 for, running of a cheap 400w (max) jensen amp, and a 10inch sub+ amp.
The sonys sound ok but im looking at turning it up a notch... I want people to get in the car and immediately notice that the SQ is better than average, will a $350 pair of alpine type-r's do the trick?
How much difference in SQ is there really in the type-r's and the $1000 type-x??
ALso i went into jb-hi and asked to have a listen to the best speakers they have and they were kicker RS series and i thought they sound amazing does anyone have any experience with these and how they rate to the alpine type r's???
cheers

Yeah around $350 - $400 you should be able to get really good sounding splits, a lot better than your Sonys that's for sure.
The type R splits are supposed to be pretty good but have a listen to a few brands if you can. Some people love Focal but others say their high frequencies are a bit too shrill and piercing (especially in the small space you have in a car - not so much in a display board in a showroom), haven't heard them myself. I find that I don't like the sound of speakers that have metal dome tweeters (a bit harsh sounding), I much prefer textile type tweeters but thats just personal preference.
They all sound different in a car but its still worth having a good listen on the display boards. If you think the Kickers sound amazing, then you should seriously consider them - its better to trust your own ears than let other people tell you what sounds best.
With splits, the final result depends heavily on the way they are installed. If you are going to spend $350+ on speakers, it's definitely worth reading up on what has to be done to get the most from them.
There's a bunch of options when it comes to tweeter installation - some people blutac them in different locations to test them out before deciding on where to install them.

I spent $1,000 on Boston Acoustics Pro Series splits… worth every cent for the quality sound they make

I have had a few different types (brands) of splits in the past,
I have had the older style Pioneer yellow cone ones $500
Kicker low range $180
Crappy Pioneers $150
JVC Ones-$250-->
Now i may sound full of sh it but these were buy far the best sounding
splits i have ever had.
If you go to JB and ask them for the JVC Kevlar cone splits
(they are not usually on the display board)
Now remember you will need a decent amp to run splits
I had a Clarion 2channel that wor putting 70w RMS into
them and it was perfect.
So a 400w max amp will be fine to run them
My Personal chioce...
$250 for JVC splits, $100 -$150 on new amp for them.
Put the sony's in the parcel shelf running off the jensen amp.
Will sound nuts mate...
Sorry for the long write up lol.
Cheers
Tim

I HAD a set of these for about 3 days until one of the tweeters decided to pack it in, so my opinion of them is fairly low. I also found that the mid-range on them wasn't all that crash hot either; certainly not worth the asking price.
I'd steer clear of any of the Alpine speakers (Value for money is fairly poor compared to other brands), JL are very good for a mid-high priced speaker (depending on series) as are Rockford Fosgate, much much better quality than Alpine. As already stated, Focal and Boston both rate fairly well also, just depends what YOU like.
The best advice anyone can give however is to go and pay a visit to your nearest high-end car audio store and then a visit to JB, compare the different speakers both have and you will soon see and decide for yourself what you would prefer, then it all comes down to your budget!
People can give opinions and recommendations, but at the end of the day everyone's tastes are different and equipment one persons believes to sound awesome, others may not.

Kicker speakers are nothing great, and you need to do alot of research from the sounds of it, you wont need rear speakers if you have a really good set up front, component speakers come with a cross over, the cross over splits the frequencys up into highs and lows, the lows go to the midbass driver, the highs go to the tweeter, this gives you more install options and as a rule they're alot better than your normal 6x9 or 6" coaxial speakers

i went 2 sets of focal krx2 spilts, 6 1/2 inch, $1100 per set, unbelievable quality.. i havnt even heard mine in a fully enclosed space yet but they made my shed ring louder then most night clubs do... mind u amps were 1/4 volume and stereo was just over 1/2 great sound,
the highs are very peircing unless u got some serious kick behind them, u definately want to have them running at least 100rms each for premium sound, other then that u need alot of amp tweaking and head unit tweaking etc.
rockford and kicker splits are pretty decent in there entry level but then again so are the lower lvl focals, but even if u asked ur local store to play through the different levels of focal u will be amazed, but once again the rockfords and kickers are very bassy and wouldnt require 6x9's if u are running a sub however, i would definately be looking at something like focal, jl or boston. however listen to stevo 88 he knows what he is talking about and definately test around where u want ur tweeters and dont go budget with an amp, u will more likely be let down by a poor amp over a poor set of speakers.... plug any speaker into the head unit.. they will sound very similar to each other.... ****
my two cents.... cheers

i just bought a set of DDC6.5 from the Mobile electronics australia forum for 211 delivered new.
i have about 300 worth of mates rates mb quart splits and a mate has some cheap dd splits that crap all over mine with the same h/u and similair amp power ratings. (both 70wrms but birthsheeted slightly differnet)
i haven't got them yet but the mate who recomended them owns the splits that i said that are better than mine and these (according to him) are much better again. he is always a few steps ahead of me on install quality and component quality so he's in the know.
good luck man. dd splits will be a million times better than anything sony and will be the standout of your system fo sho
oh and as above listen to them!
don't take techno / pop music which is overproduced and will sound good on anything take something like a blues cd. i always use 'sweet 16' by the fureys an irish american band from the late 70's. don't be afraid to turn em up reallllly loud aswell.
also remember that what you hear on the board is different to the car. the stageing is just as important as the speaker. have a look at my install thread and maybe a browse through my photobucket just to get an idea of what i deem a budget / low knowledge install.
i recently signed upto MEA and my last install was just trying to imitate what i had learned from there with my existing gear. i could have gone a lot further but i am happy with the results. good luck man just like the power bug once you start to get into audio theres no going back.

cheap, quality, long lasting <=== choose 2
Look at Boston acoustics, Focal or MB quart, (go to stores and listen to them... bring a cd...) and when you have found exactly what you want, start pulling favours and try to find it at trade price
cant go wrong =D

13-08-09, 16:23 GMT+10#12 I've found eclipse and focal to have really nice sounding splits, use your ears, if you like the sound of a cheaper pair of splits over an expensive pair, buy them. As others have said, take in some CD's that you like and know the sound of, but don't use some crappy mp3 rip, use a REAL CD. But in saying all that, if you have a sh*tty HU going into a sh*tty amp, your still going to get sh*tty sound no matter how expensive or great your splits are. Remember your HU is what processes the sound and sends it to the amp/speakers, just something to keep in mind. Also if your after SQ, budget yourself for some decent sound deadening, it makes all the world of difference, so does speaker placement.

edit: Also take a stroll over to MEA and read up about SQ, i've been a member there for years and years and those blokes have the best knowledge in Aus.

13-08-09, 17:08 GMT+10#13 Guys, why are you replying to a thread that has already run its course??
I know you all have plenty to say, but the original poster hasn't replied since early June and most likely bought his speakers weeks ago, so you're wasting your time.
