any clue what the biggest amp output is from an alternator suited to a vl? im chasing a high powered alt. not keen on an r33 alt. looking for 120-200a 150+ preferable, i know auto leccys have a nack for rebuilding them but is that my only option for this sort of out put? any previous experience or anything along those lines would be great in advance, there are similar threads to this but none that really answered the questions i had. plus i didnt wanna hi jack a thread :P cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I had similar problems running 2 kicker kx650.4 amps. Some nights my alarm would go off due to the low battery power. Even some mornings the car wouldn't crank over, or it would just crank over. My lights would dim every time the bass would hit just like a pair of disco lights. Anyway I place a Bosch 120amp alternator on and since then I've had no problems.

sounds like the install has commenced. you need to get some pics up mate keen as. I have 90amp skyline alternator going into my car once back on the road and they go for cheap I paid around $50 for it. make sure you run some really good earth leads (upgrade them) mated to nice clean body metal and keep them as short as possible. although upgrading alternator is a good thing I would firstly look at a nice battery (optima yellow top etc). You had some engine upgrads planed so amplifiers, big fuel pumps, upgraded ignition systems etc all need good power supply to run at their best. all the best with it and get these pics up.

Originally I had a standard alternator and every morning I'd wake up and the calais just wouldn't turn over. Running two kicker amps, 2x 10inch kicker comp subs, 2x 6x9's, 2x splits and 2x accuvolts(running at 14.4volts accuratly) Firstly I went the cheap option and had a friend who is a machinist to make up a smaller alternator pulley(wheel) and placed that on. It worked a treat until about 6 months later it had burnt out the internals of the alternator. So that's when I brought a 120amp alternator. Since then, no dimming lights like a disco with the bass and no more flat battery's in the morning. Also I run two battery's with a solenoid isolator to equal the amount of power from the alternator to the two battery's.

how much does a 120 amp alternator cost? is it just a straight swap? can you get the std alternator reco'ed to 120 amp?

You can go to some auto elects and they do a change over, which is properly the cheaper option. I once had my alternator beefed up to 160amp where they move the plates closer, but at idle it was only producing 20amp. Only good for constant freeway - highway driving. When I was sitting at lights the battery would flatten running 2 amplifiers. In the end I sum it up as a waste of money.

I read on MEA that you can buy Bosch "ambulance spec" alternators. Someone mentioned a model #bh 1259 that apparently puts out 60amps at idle and 100amps at higher revs, and he said that more powerful ones are available too. Apparently they are used for emergency vehicles & cop cars etc that need to run floodlights and other stuff while they are parked idling. They are meant to be really good for big car stereos, and are more suitable than big 4WD alternators etc.

Best thing I ever did was buy a 120amp alternator. No drama's there.

nah i found a better alternator, its by DENSO its a 220amp alt and it runs a fair amount of amps at idle, along with being quite small and light for the size, its setting me back a few hundred but well worth it... and mr squiggle i havnt got too far yet, ive been doing over time at work, not to mention moving house so its hard to find the time, but ill def take pics of what ive started and pics of my journey through the install. hopefully its gonna be one kick ass system Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
