Putting a camshaft in my vs 5L, the cam iv'e chosen is crow cam part # 4651
with lobe seperation 113 valve lift 0.492 inlet opens 32 deg btdc inlet closes 70 deg atdc exhaust opens 78 deg bbdc exhaust closes 24 deg atdc
has any one used a similar cam to this in a 5L or any better suggestions? could you use the standard pushrods, lifters and valve springs? also how much did the fuel econmey drop?
Thanks in advance.

The Wade 1522C1536B is apparently the best camshaft to suit the standard manifold.
That, some roller rockers, LT1 style springs, and tune, aswell as a good exhuast, will get it all moving.
You will definately need springs, lifters, a gasket set and a tune.
But can get away with standard pushrods, rockers etc, but it is easy to just change it all at once.
My fuel economy improved when i put the cam in.

cool mate i'll let ya know. ordered the crow cam today should be here in a week or so, going to use standard valve springs/pushrods/rockers for now and see how it goes.

thats a fairly small cam (the crow cam) pretty much looks like a moderate towing cam

It would be worth doing valve springs, collets and retainers. (looking at about $130 all up, in parts)

doing a crane 286 cam and lifters, shaved heads 50thou, lt1 springs with collets and retainers, rollmaster double row timing chain, blue top injectors and a tune, will post when i get results. backed up by a rebuilt th700 with 2500rpm stall.
did similar combo on a mates vr ss except with a 284 instead and 5spd, made 183.6rwkw, not big power but sure got up and went at the slip of the clutch.
look forward to seeing your results mate...

was that all done on standard 5 litre? because ive been thinking of doing pretty much the same package but ive been told a 286 cam wont work good with that sort of compression even with the shaved heads.

08-06-09, 16:29 GMT+10#10 286 is too big for stock manifold but hey, it still goes alright. 10:1 is perfect for it but im only gunna get around 9.4:1 which i think is good enough for a budget banger, like all these parts have cost me stuff all so thought mise well do it to my 5L. 284 is probably the best cam to use on the stock bottom end and stock manifold combo as in the biggest you'd use. can rev them nicely to 6000rpm no dramas before it becomes a problem (being safe)

11-06-09, 17:37 GMT+10#14 do you have to upgrade the injectors with that package?

11-06-09, 17:51 GMT+10#15 apprently not according to crow cams, it's not really a massive cam. I was also told the standard 185i ecu would work well with the cam, i guess it's a matter of putting it in and seeing how it goes.

11-06-09, 20:36 GMT+10#16 is that cam gonna give a choppy sort of idle?

Does that mean you gotta get the 185i ecu
Does the cam you bought add an lumpy idle?

12-06-09, 18:56 GMT+10#18 '185i ecu' is just a memcal/chip that clips into the ecu.
these cams mentioned above (apart from cam packages) that are off shelf most need a custom tune to suit, and only really work with a decent exhaust, fresh service and cai setup. so have a hsv ecu wont do anything due to the fact the memcal has to be rewritten and tuned to suit the setup of your motor.
best thing for most is to pay the 1k that gives you the cam, valve springs, lifters, memcal and timing chain that is offered in the Crow cam's kits, cheap for that fact its slot in, memcal in and drive it. not the best tune in the world but still quite decent and they also have 3 different tunes, one of them will suit your motor fine.
stock injectors are ok for these setups but will be pretty much on there full duty cycle. tracking down a set of bosch 775 (215i hsv stroker injectors), bosch 706 (vn grp a) or even ls1 gen 3 injectors will do the job fine as will your stock fuel pump providing its still in good nick.
but cos im fussy, i like to do things my way and i want a decent cam in mine to suit the manifold and the fact im changing the bottom end later on down the track.
its either cam kit for 1-1500bucks or 2k or so for custom setup.
power can range from 160-200rwkw depend on your setup.
