This Federal government service allows you to check details of a vehicle and avoid some of the risks that can occur when purchasing a car.
For example, if you buy a vehicle which has been stolen, has money owing on it, or has been written-off, you risk the vehicle being repossessed or unable to be registered.
Always physically verify all the numbers on the vehicle yourself, don't rely on the seller or the vehicle rego papers to be accurate

There is a small fee for each service, currently around $3.70

Thanks for posting them up as I have been looking at cars from interstate or with with interstate number plates on them and was wondering how to do a check on them.

no worries Philby,
as mentioned always check numbers yourself before handing over $, never rely on papers being correct or all 'owners' being honest over the phone

yeah, im in the car industry....so let me tell u guys doin these types of checks pays off ten fold.
Trust me..u dont want to be driving your newly bought car only to be pulled over by cops for a random search and find out u got a bottom end from N.S.W, a chassis sold in TAS and rego'd in QLD.
Good on ya aus880, more people need to be aware of this, im gobsmacked as to the people who exist out there and buy cars without checks.

01-03-12, 04:30 GMT+10#11 please note that there's been a major change to this service
there are no longer individual state services doing this service, it's now handled by one Federal Govt agency
Therefore wherever you are in Australia you now contact the Personal Properties Security Register
new phone number and web address is in the thread above
