In short, no you do not NEED a surge tank. If you plan on doing any circuit work or competition drag racing, then a surge tank is a must.

I'm running the stock intank pump which feeds a surge tank and then a bosch 044. Before I fitted my surge tank the bosch pump would make all sorts of weird noises (like it had bubbles in it) and the fuel pressure would vary depending on how much fuel I had. I fitted the surge tank and all the problems stopped.

You might be able to get away with getting a new stock internal pump. Best hiding place would be under the car. Their more expensive than the normal ones. You could put it in your boot like this http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=164412 and get a sub box, sheet of mdf to hide it.

so what use my standard stock internal pump to pump the fuel to the surge tank and then a 044 to pump it from surge tank to engine

The way I have mine is the intank fills the surge tank and the surge tank goes to the bosch 044 to the engine. the return line goes to a T piece which goes back the the surge tank and the fuel tank.

yeh like a baffled sump....only for extreme g's of circuit/race/drift i've just got mine going from the intank pump into the 044 like originally they have installed but with the 044 instead.

So 80% of 870cc = 696cc (per minute) 696cc x 6 injectors = 4176cc/min = 4.176 lts/min An 044 will be just shy of this i think. The above assumes you want to make full use of the injectors.

What if you have under a 1/4 of a tank will it still keep up then? will it be effictive enough to scavenge the tank when it is that low? Do you really want to risk these things when your foots buried to the floor and your approaching 6krpm and 20+psi of boost?
