Hey guys my brother is thinking of changing his VB from 202 to 253/308, if he doesnt sell it. But we were discussing what you have to change around for this conversion, i've read that you dont need to change k-frame and diff (for the moment), but need to up grade to v8 brakes/suspension.
What else needs to be changed or considered?

Radiator and tacho calibration not to mention wiring.

Radiator, K Frame, extractors, exhaust, auto, (diff wont last long so start saving), tail shaft, gearbox cross member, convertor, wire the thing up, fuel pump, assuming engine and ignition is all complete, suspension, brakes.
Seriously, buy a V8 one.

im currently doing a conversion in my vl from 6 to 8 . isnt really that pricey just hunt around , picked up a k frame for $50 . just keep your eyes open. for motor wise im buying a efi 304 ripping the injection off and going carby, lot more simply then efi

I doubt you would need a k-frame you dont on a Torana.
V8 radiator would cost next to nothing as it could come out of any old commodore or be made to fit easily.
You would want a killer exhaust anyway so thats no big deal.
Gearbox/trans would be bought with engine id think.
There are about 2 wires needed to get it running.
Fuel pump is mechanical so would come with engine.
Just put in V8 front springs.
Tail shaft would be easily found and cheap.
Just a bit of work really the only big money item would be a decent 308 as most of the ones for sale are re-built and then thrashed or tired and old. A tired old 253 or 308 will be slower than the 202.
Just make sure the engine isnt older than the car or you wont be able to register it.

^You need a k frame, its not a torana.
No one will ever check the date your engine was produced, any 308 will do the job.

u dont need to change k frame only engine mounts are different.....

30-04-09, 22:22 GMT+10#10 VB - VK k-frame is the same for 6's and 8's
Thanks everyone for writing, we have a way better understanding of what needs to be done

01-05-09, 19:06 GMT+10#11 Yeah i didnt think you needed a K-frame.
VL RB30 K-fame will bolt any RB enigne into any commodore if say you wanted to make a VS Skyladore or Commaline or whatever you want to call it.
I thought you said VK thats why i mentioned the engine age thing because you couldnt fit a red motor. But you can put any 308 in a VB so long as it retains the original emmisions stuff. I would use a VL Black engine i think it is as they had the L34 heads.
Good luck mate

VL Black 304 is an LV2. Runs BLACK heads. with pollution gear fitted. Far from L34 heads mate. All blocks red, blue, black are almost identical. only difference is black blocks had slightly thicker webbing as to accomodate for the VL/VN Supercars that where spinning to 8,500 to 9,000 RPM.

01-05-09, 22:32 GMT+10#13 well actually the vl black motor heads had 1.94inlet 1.60exaust valves same size as L34

09-05-12, 16:30 GMT+10#14 I wouldn't bother going for a 253 because A - the red 202 in the HQ put out 101KW,@4400 RPM with a peak torque of 263NM@2000 RPM,B- the EFI VK engine was only 5 KW more at 106KW@4400RPM and a peak torque of 266NM@3200 RPM, so there is bugger all difference between the red carby engine & the black EFI motor in that regard.
The blue 253 engine specs are as follows :-
Maximum Power: 100kW @ 4200rpm with standard single exhaust, 115kW @ 4400rpm with twin exhaust option
Maximum Torque: 269Nm @ 2000rpm with standard single exhaust, 289Nm @ 3200rpm with twin exhaust option
This engine is detuned from the HQ days to satisfy emission control requirements so the red motor is more powerful.
The blue 308 specs are as follows :-
Maximum Power: 117kW @ 4000 rpm with standard single exhaust, 126kW @ 4400 rpm with twin exhaust option
Maximum Torque: 336Nm @ 2400 rpm with standard single exhaust, 361Nm @ 2800 rpm with twin exhaust option.
I'd be trying to find the 308 out of the VK if you could (good luck finding one) with a 5 speed manual, the specs for that are as follows :-
Power: 177kw at 4800rpm (dual exhaust)
Torque: 419Nm at 3500rpm (dual exhaust)
That's for the high output engine, would be ideal (I think that was the Brock spec engine Holden fitted to the police cars).
The figures for the standard engine are :-
Power: 126kw@4400 rpm
Torque: 361nm@2800rpm
The standard 304 engine was :-
122kw@ ???? (can't find all the figures for that motor in the VK)
I'd just go for an EFI motor out of a VN-VS Commodore
Specs for that are as follows :-
Power: 165kw at 4400rpm
Torque: 385Nm at 3600rpm
I think they bumped the power figure up to 168KW in the VS and 180KW in the VT1 ,the HSV 5 litre was 195 kw in the VT.
I'd be going for a twin exhaust setup in either case and from what I've heard through different wreckers, the 304ci is the only one they sell now, they very rarely get a 253/308 engine.
