Positives or negatives for either engine.......and why?
Reason being is that I am looking into buying a VY or VZ Berlina or Calais in the next month or two. I realise the VZ is a newer car and may be the preferred option for most people...but
Does anyone have any comments/reasons/experiences/problems to report with VY or VZ engines and why you would choose one over the other. My VS with ecotec V6 has given trouble free motoring.
Anyone had any issues with the alloytec engine at all.
I have head that if the Alloytec thermostat requires replacement, then it becomes costly as its in the front of the engine and isn't as straight forward as replacing on ecotec.
Any other comments or reasons?
Cheers
Matt

well i know of a problem with the VY. it's not an engine problem but anyways..... the first bunch of VYs that came out had gearbox problems and needed to be replaced. so just watch out that u dont get one that hasnt had this problem fixed

I got 8.3L/100km on a long trip in my VT exec! 3.8L
still had some fuel left too in tank! but the alloytech should be better than that!?
though i drove a vz once and thought it was gutless compared to the ecotech! different tho!

In my 5sp Manual VS Ecotec I get 8L/100km. I haven't had any major dramas in 2 years with it. Just curious on the Alloytecs in terms of how they go with high kms. I know the Ecotecs get an oil leak here and there etc, but how have ppl found Alloytecs and reliability with over 100,000kms and do they develop any specific issues???? Any mechanics who work on them out there???

phantom t where ya goin with the alloytec bein gutless.
i had a run against a vt ss which had pace maker extractors, hi flow cat 2 1/2" zorst and chomped it. i do have a vz sv6 which is the high output motor.
the alloytec motor is by far way more ballsy than the ecotec and alot better on fuel.

Was the VT SS a Series 1 5L or Series 2 5.7 ?? Coz Im positive u wouldn't b beating LS1z , even a 5L would keep up with a Alloytec no worries

20-04-09, 00:15 GMT+10#10 my VT. Ecotec 3.8L. Sydney-Summernats and back. 2/3 Tank. Well looked after though zero oil leaks.
Only probs your gunna have with the ecotec are CAS, DFI modules. and maybe a fuel pump.
As for the VZ Alloytec. they do run hot. and are prone to sludging up the oil system if not serviced regularly unlike the ecotec which you can top up with no frills oil.
I work for an auto spark and we deal with basically everything. The alloytec so far seems good. only changed one CAS(commodores and the cas???WTF?) and one had a fcuked ECU. but thats 1-2 examples.
At the end of the day, take em both for a drive. See what you prefer.

20-04-09, 02:05 GMT+10#11 Thanks Lubche. Great info there. With regards to taking both for a drive though, well its not going to sway me either way in that respect. Reason being is that its my daily and I just want luxury mainly (hence calais) and reliability as my 10 sec VL Berlina gets the money spent on it.
Speed and power isn't a factor at all. If the alloytec is slightly slower and the ecotec quicker or vice versa, then that doesn't worry me at all. I can't remember the last time that I floored my Ecotec VS. Driving my daily is just that. Its a daily and its not about power. Its about getting from A to B. I don't try to race my Ecotec VS daily and with good reason (its 147kw).....I have a 400kw VL in the garage.
No point in having 2 cars that are driven hard. I really want reliability and a luxury ride with full electrics and comfort hence why I want a calais VY or VZ. Just unsure of Alloytecs once the kms are clocked up as they haven't been around for as long and just wanting ppl who work on them for a living or ppl who drive them to comment with experiences.
Thanks for information everyone.
Anyone else got any info or experiences they want to share about alloytecs mainly??

Thanks so much for that post....with such wisdom displayed, I think I am now swaying towards getting a V8...........NOT!
If you haven't got any comments which are helpful towards the thread and display a little more thought than going to the toilet, then please keep out of my thread.
Thanks

21-04-09, 22:09 GMT+10#16 Eren u drive an ecotec!
standard high output alloytec is 193 at the flywheel.
only seen one worked vz which was for sale on here, not sure on what power it was making.
but with some decent mods, should be pretty easy to see good power.

I never said power :P... TBH i enjoy driving my ecotec VT. It's smooth, comfy and doesnt miss a bit..until the DFI system cra**ed its guts. To be on the absolute safe side mate, id go the ecotec (vy) they have been proven to last, time and time again. I have some customers with VS,VTs that are well beyond the 400,000KM mark and are still running sweet. Also i had a rep come in from AC delco today. They are having a few issues with the FRENCH(wtf..stupid) built Hydro 5L40E 5speed auto in the VZ-VE range v6's. T700, with trans service every 40,000-50,000KM seem to last without major abuse(read no neutral dumprollbackscuz)
