im getting on idle close to 40deg when i turn distributor it seems to be fine because to far ret its hard to turn engine over and to far adv it spins freely. i set the timing by ear for now. what do you guys think it could be. i was thinking balancer twisted on rubber and is out. but if any1 has had or heard of this problem before let me know any advice or tips appreciated. thanks.

well i thought u were referring to a timing belt slipping on the balancer. and i don't see how anything the balancer does affects the cam timing as the crank is connected to cam via chain, but i could be wrong

LOL the bloke is talking about ignition timing and your talking about cam timing? Champ what model motor is it (red, blue, black)? And what ignition system?? ie: points, elec etc??

well buddy cam and ignition timing are very well much related. a stretched timing chain can dramatically affect ignition timing as i found out with my last motor. but ANYWAY, mate what rpm is ur idle at?

brand new engine and TIMMING GEARS AND CHAIN.lol original vl 5L block standard ignition system. and the balancer will affect the timming read out cause if its slipped will show diferent timming cause the 0 mark could be anywhere if its slipped. the balancer tend to slip on the damper rubber between the inner and outer piece of the balancer and you get the timming off the outside of the balancer.lol.

stop with all the chit chat and do things right the first time and you wouldnt have these problems. get a timing light a check the timing. check or change the balancer get a steel one. step by step and eliminate problems just dont half check or do something
