Today I went to get my RB30 tuned, it has a lt8s microtech single coil and dizzy setup. When we went to set the static timing at 10 degrees the timing was locked thru the computer as you do,but when the timing light was on the motor when you reved the engine it would still advance and i mean ALOT probably up to about 50 degrees! to the point where it would backfire as it tried to fire the cylinder before. The laptop reads the timing as 10 degrees fixed and does not change when you rev it but the timing marks on the crank tell another story, there is no play in the dizzy or harmonic balancer and the advance is very smooth like its being controlled by the microtech. So at the end of the day we could not get any help out of microtech and could not tune the car either, if anyone has any ideas or has ever come across this before any input would be appreciated. Thanks Christian

We have also tried 3 different timing lights.

Are you running standard CAS sensor? Change the trigger angle from + to - or from - to + This is normally an issue when using a reluctor sensor not a hall effect like in the RB. Be aware yo will have to reset base timing when yo do. Are you runnig CDI?

Are you runnig CDI? The CAS is standard and there is just standard ignition parts, no CDI, im pretty sure Matt played around with the CAS reference and bits and pieces but not sure about trigger angle, i'll have a play this morning, going to put a mates lt10s in today and just see what the timng does when thats in as that will rule out the engine as the problem or the computer. Thanks for your reply. Christian

Wish me luck!

Im pretty happy as the motor has done over 180000 k's! Now I want it to blow up so I can build a bottom end and put some real boost into it and aim for 10 sec zone. Ended up using an AU falcon coil pack which works great the only thing is the two outer pins on the plug need to be reversed compared with the EF diagram that microtech has but using the AU one its smaller and you can use your existing plug leads, Its throwing a 1-1.5 inch spark too out of the lead!
