jap auto wreckers i guess.
u should rebuild ur bottom end to turbo spec (and probably stonger) and maybe throw some money at other bolt ons. <- in my opinion
if ur doing an rb25det conversion yourself be prepared for a wiring nightmare

why dont you buy another complete na motor and bolt the 25 head on that with the stock turbo/ecu and go from there.

thanks for feed back guys those are all thoughts i may consider but i realy like the idea of a fresh rb25det with 50000km on the clock and addin some bolt on's wiring i will not do myself will leave that to the pro's i have all the wiring diagrams ready wat would be the hardest about the wiring side of things would the enigine loom plug straight in to the ecu then it just all the rest for the ignition and stuff wouldnt it

definately just wack the rb25det head on a RB30 N/A bottom end, run it with the RB25DET ecu and it will be fine. . thats really all there is to it.. (and relocating the tensioner, and a new belt). .
Simple. .
Youll be kicking yourself if you dont do it and then drive a RB30DET one day

if your buying a complete rb25det why would you not. its basically the exact same amount of work

fitting a twin cam head on rb30 not that simple

drill and tap the head if you want vvti, run external oil feed to head, get head welded in spot where the gallery is off, fit oil restrictors, drill and tap block for an extra tensioner pulley, buy longer timing belt. done

rofl its a bit more dificult that that.
1. you do not only tap and feed the vvti unit oil if you want to use it you have to do it weather you want it or not the oil that feeds it also gives the cam journal oil.
2. from memory the rb25 head has a bigger water gallery most of it matches the rb30 block but a small section will not that piece needs welding so does the oil feed hole that is there then the head needs machining.
3. you should use a bigger oil pump and it is a good idea to install a crank collar at the same time to save it breaking the pump or rounding the drive off the crank these cost 125 and a machine shop can fit them done a couple of them nothing to hard and should not be very expencive.
4. you need oil restrictors pm matt VHR32 on here i think his username is he has all the info on what sized oil restrictors suit what pump etc you can get the restrictors from lewis engines.
5. timing belt there is 2 ways to go about it
1. the proper way is to drill and tap another hole and put in the extra pulley and buy a belt to suit i have one and can count the teeth if you like there is also another thread where you will find pics and details fo exactly where to drill this.
2. you can fit a extra pulley to the existing hole next to the stock pulley this means there is a fair distance between where the belt runs on the tentioners and the cam pulleys i would not do it but it has been done this can only be done on a series 2 block.
6. im not sure about this but what i read somewhere ages ago said the stock rb25 plenum either hits the vl bonnet when combined with the rb30 block or goes very close to it.
if you do decide to do the conversion try get hold of a na rb25 head from a r32 they have no vvti you still need to weld up the water gallery but they have bigger cams etc and no **** vvti.
its not the smallest job but nothing about it is hard and it will be well worth it.

20-03-09, 23:58 GMT+10#11 this thread is straying a lil the guy wants a fresh rb25 not a hybrid
imo go the twin cam mate and ive seen kyle state many a time there the best option as far as any unopened rb motor goes

21-03-09, 22:00 GMT+10#12 before you do it, add up what you think it will cost to do the job "properly" then add some more.
work out what power you want, then add some more.
then check out www.lewisengines.com.au (http://www.lewisengines.com.au) and see if it is worth the hassles of the conversion..
i wish i had of just rebuilt the rb30 into a turbo motor instead of doing a motor conversion.
goodluck mate.

21-03-09, 22:54 GMT+10#13 i drove a R34 with 60k or so on the clock... after a 5 minute drive, the whole driveline was stuffed....
remember the skyline motors are from a lil jap sports car that has been flogged for its whole life
a vl is a family car. and a vl calais is a old person car who bought one when they retired back in the late 80's
thats the way i look at it, the rb25 may have 50k kays on it, but they are most likely much harder than the vl kays

13-06-09, 20:35 GMT+10#14 i don't see how hard it would be to install an rb25det into the vl?
Use the vl engine mounts and the pwr steering unit, plus the alternator!
then install the rb25 ecu and loom! get the ignition integrated into the loom and bob's your uncle! well in theory anyway! there are always problems! lol
but i say go the rb25det for sure! the rb30 is old now plus its 30kw down from factory! and the head is nowhere near the flow capabilities of the stock 25head even when the 30head is ported/polished!
just my 2c
how much can a half cut cost?
$2500?
